This year’s Switzerland County boys track team is again coached by Sean McGarvey — who is entering his sixth year coaching the squad.
The boys track team has a total of 17 athletes this year — which is the most participants they have had since Coach McGarvey’s first year in 2001.
There are several upper classmen returning this year and there will be strength in the sprint events, with senior Ben Hickman, junior T.J. Sefton and sophomore Brandon Otter participating. Sophomore Nathan Hickman and senior Josh Wegman also return to add points to the track team.
In the field events, seniors B.J. Shelton and Anthony Kaczmarek will be returning. Joe Spoores, Allen Paris, and Aaron Deacon also return to help with the goal of taking the team to a conference win in field events.
New to the boys track team this year is junior Matt Johnson, and freshmen Chad Robinson and Adam Kaczmarek, who will be helping out with middle and long distance running. Zach Rayls will be participating in field events; and Kyle Green will be adding points for the team in hurdling and sprinting.
“This year the focus in distance is more quality than quantity with senior Josh Snow and junior Jim Abbott returning,” Coach McGarvey said. “If we have a weakness this year, it would be in distance because of the number of participants.”
There will be two managers this year to help the team out: Ashley Bovard and Emily Lanman.
“There are 12 athletes that lettered last year that have returned,” Coach McGarvey said. “I think we have a realistic chance to win conference this year.”
The team’s first meet will be a triple meet with Jac-Cen-Del and Rising Sun tonight (Thursday) at home beginning at 5 p.m.
