Ohio County has 46 HSE graduates

The High School Equivalency (HSE) graduation ceremony held at the Schroeder Building within the Ohio County Fairgrounds was a well-attended event with 200+ people in attendance honoring the 46 HSE graduates for the 2017-2018 year.

The High School Equivalency (HSE) graduation ceremony held at the Schroeder Building within the Ohio County Fairgrounds was a well-attended event with 200+ people in attendance honoring the 46 HSE graduates for the 2017-2018 year.
Debbie Thomason, director of the Education Center of Rising Sun, gave an enthusiastic welcome to students, family, friends, and special guests for the evening. After invocation, the event began with a professionally catered meal which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Special guests attending the celebration were Konnie McCullum, director of RVR Adult Education; Mandi Logsdon, RVR Adult Coordinator; Bill Marksberry, Rising Sun City Council; Debbie Cappel, Ohio County Auditor; Connie Brown, county commissioner; Tim Adams, county council; Peg Dickson, director of Ohio County Community Foundation with her husband, Max; DeeDee Brown, OCCF board member with her husband, Gerald; Nancy Ross, OCCF board member; Bob Sommer, OCCF board president; and Paul Bovard, Rising Sun City Street Department. Konnie McCullum spoke to the students with words of encouragement and praise for their determination in achieving their high school equivalency diploma and entering into the world of work or post-secondary education.

Sandra Bowlus, HSE instructor, is shown here with the 2018 Adult Learner of the Year for the State of Indiana – Brandon Freedom of Sunman. Brandon was nominated by Mrs. Bowlus for this prestigious award for overcoming many obstacles on his pursuit of his HSE. The award was presented at the IACCE (Indiana Association for Adult and Continuing Education) Conference held at French Lick in April.

Sandra Bowlus, HSE instructor, had the distinct honor in introducing the 2018 Adult Learner of the Year of Indiana. Brandon Freedom of Sunman. Brandon was nominated by his teacher for this prestigious award for overcoming many obstacles on his pursuit of his HSE. The award was presented at the IACCE (Indiana Association for Adult and Continuing Education) Conference held at French Lick in April.
The Education Center was especially honored in presenting fifteen students with National Adult Education Honor Society memberships. Their selection was the culmination of outstanding attendance, cooperation, and self-reliance. Each member received a professionally printed certification of membership and a NAEHS lapel pin. Each member is entitled to a letter of recommendation for future job applications and a letter of recommendation for financial assistance for post-secondary education. A huge thank you goes to the Rising Star Casino & Resort for sponsoring these awards.
