Mike Young

Lloyd Michael “Mike” Young, 59, of Vevay, passed away at 8:34 a.m. Sunday, May 8th, 2011, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.

He was born November 14th, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of William Fletcher Young and Mary Elizabeth (Welsh) Young Irby, who both preceded him in death. He was raised in Charleston, Illinois, where he attended school. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged from service. He was formerly employed as a janitor in Madison and Warsaw, Kentucky, before becoming disabled and had resided in Vevay since 1985. He will be remembered for his love of playing the guitar and was a fan of Elvis Presley.

Survivors include his daughter, Laurie Baker of Charleston; his sons, Ronald Keys and Donald Keys, both of Paris, Illinois; his granddaughter, Caitlinn Hurt; his brothers, Charles Young and wife Denise of Vevay, Tom Young and wife Debbie of Leavenworth, Indiana, and Steve Irby of Charleston; his sister, Sharon Young and companion Gary Springer of Vevay; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Walter L. Irby; and his brothers, James Young, William Young and Walter “Buddy” Irby, Jr.

Funeral services will be conducted by Reverend Larry Welsh at 1 p.m. Friday, May 13th, at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. Cecil Thompson

John “Cecil” Thompson, 92, of Cross Plains, formerly of Allensville, passed away at 2:45 p.m. Friday, May 6th, 2011, at Hospice of Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Ohio.

He was born April 4th, 1919, in Little York, Washington County, Indiana, the son of John C. and Virginia (Zaring) Thompson. He was a 1937 graduate of Little York High School and a 1941 graduate of Purdue University’s School of Agriculture. He served during World War II as a U.S. Army artillery officer with the 11th Airborne Division in the Philippines and Japan. He later worked for and retired from the USDA Farmers Home Administration, now called Rural Development, where he was instrumental in helping to bring city water to rural communities throughout Southeastern Indiana. He was a member of the American Legion Post 173 of Versailles and a good Democrat.

He was united in marriage on October 5th, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Dorthey Kummings of Lafayette. She preceded him in death on October 10th, 1995.

Survivors include his sons, Lee Thompson and wife Marla of Holton, Fred Thompson and wife Mary Sue of Benham and Jim Thompson and wife Dorthy of Milford, Ohio; his daughter, Becky Freeman of Lancaster, California; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Alta Fisher and Lota Jane Nichols.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, May 14th, by Reverend Howard Bell with burial in Vevay Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of Versailles American Legion Post 173 at the cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Nancy Holt

Nancy Florence (Turner) Holt, 77, of Pleasant, passed away at 3:04 a.m. Sunday, May 8th, 2011, at King’s Daughters; Hospital in Madison.

She was born January 15th, 1934, in Christopher, Kentucky, the daughter of Martin T. Turner and Maude (Clay) Turner Deaton, who both preceded her in death.

She was united in marriage in March, 1953, in Kentucky, to Galen C. Biddle. Unto this union three sons and three daughters arrived to bless their home. On April 16th, 1976, she was united in marriage in Covington, Kentucky, to Paul Edward Holt. Unto this union two daughters arrived to bless their home.

She was a grocery store clerk for many years and was employed at Smith’s Grocery in Burlington, Kentucky, S & J Market and Country Corner in Pleasant. She w as a loving mother and grandmother and got much enjoyment out of spending time with her family. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, fishing, gardening and watching her hummingbirds. She was a member of Manville Christian Church and loved listening to Brother George.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Edward Holt of Pleasant; her daughters, Sandy Floyd and husband George of Dry Ridge, Kentucky, Joyce Biddle of Florence, Kentucky, Patty Stewart and husband Neil of Center Square, and Jenny Chandler and husband Doug of Bennington; her sons, Jimmy Biddle of Florence, Kentucky, Jerry Biddle and wife Becky of Burlington, Kentucky, and Kelly Biddle and wife Michelle of Florence, Kentucky; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Freda Biddle of Burlington, Kentucky and Mabel Biddle and husband Carl of Burlington; and a host of other relatives.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Galen C. Biddle; her daughter, Beverly Denser in March, 2004; her grandson, James Michael Biddle on January 23rd, 1977; and her brother, Lloyd Turner.

Funeral services were conducted by Brother George A. Severn and Neil Stewart Wednesday, May 11th, at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Pleasant Cemetery. Albert Ranz

Albert George Ranz, 90, of Markland, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Monday, May 9th, 2011, in Florence, Kentucky.

He was born December 26th, 1920, in Cheviot, Ohio, the son of Albert S. and Esther (Schneider) Ranz, who both preceded him in death. He was raised in Cheviot and was a 1938 graduate of St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on May 19th, 1942, rising to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, serving during World War II as a bombardier in the 456th Bomb Group, 745th Bomb Squadron. He participated in campaigns in the European Theater Air Corps, the 15th Air Force 456 Group in the European African Middle Eastern Set. His crew flew 15 missions out of their base in Italy, in the B-24 Bomber. The war was raging on and on their 16th mission, the plane was shot down and Albert Ranz was captured by the German Army. He was badly injured and spent 13 months in the German Prison Camps until he was rescued by the American Army. He earned the Purple Heart, the American Campaign European African Middle Eastern Set and t he Air Medal for his service to his country. He was honorably discharged on November 15th, 1945, at Camp Atterbury, Indiana.

He was united in marriage on June 10th, 1950, in Lawrenceburg, to Margaret B. “Meg” Hatton. Unto this union four daughters and a son arrived to bless their home.

He was a plasterer with his father in Cincinnati, later taking over the Ranz Plastering business that he operated for over 50 years. He also owned and operated the Delhurst Fishing Lake in Delphi and Al’s Lounge in Bridgeport, Ohio, until 1994. Al and Meg purchased a farm in Markland in 1984 that they renovated and it became their home where Al enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Most Sorrowful Mother of God Catholic Church in Vevay, Vevay American Legion Post 185 and Vevay VFW Post 5396.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret B. “Meg” Ranz of Markland; his daughters, Margot Abou-Hassan and husband Hassan of Chandler, Arizona, Susan A. LeGendre of Florence, and Barbara A. Ranz of Florence, Kentucky; his son, David A. Ranz of Cincinnati; his grandchildren, Peggy Ann, Angie, Amy, Sarah, Mindy, Tricia, Allen and Bryan; his great-grandchildren, Robert, Michael, Ashley, Morgan, Rachel, Makayla, Caitlyn, Kodi, Bryce, Jaren, Kayden and Kendall; his sister, Carole Welch of Sarasota, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen E. Swales; his brother, John Ranz; and his sisters, Anne Griley, Jeanne Gursky, Norma Ranz and Ruth Niederecker.

Funeral services will be conducted by Father John A. Meyer at 2 p.m. Friday, May 13th, at Most Sorrowful Mother of God Catholic Church in Vevay. Friends may call from noon until 1:30 p.m. Friday at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in Vevay Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Honor Guard of Vevay American Legion Post 185 and Vevay VFW Post 5396 at the graveside. Memorial contributions may be made to the Most Sorrowful Mother of God Catholic Church or to Hospice of the Bluegrass.
