Ruby Cutter

Ruby Cutter, age 89, of Friendship, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, March 21st, 2009, at the Ripley Crossing in Milan.

Ruby was born on November 4th, 1919, near Pleasant in Switzerland County, the daughter of James and Anna Fry Herring. She was a 1937 graduate of Vevay High School; and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Olean.

She was married to Floyd Cutter on April 20th, 1940; and to this union came two daughters to bless their home. Ruby was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting and gardening.

Ruby is survived by her daughters: Shirley Smith and husband, Jerry, of Milan; and Judy Stutler and husband, Gary, of Friendship; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents: James and Anna Fry Herring; her husband, Floyd Cutter, who died on December 23rd, 1988; her brothers: Garland, Roscoe, Howard, and Robert Herring; and her sisters: Hattie Gabler and Amy Herring.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday, March 26th) at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Olean; with Pastor James Culver, Jr., officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter’s Cemetery in Olean, following the services.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, March 25th, at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles; and also today (Thursday) from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Memorials may be given in Ruby’s honor to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Guy Ashcraft

Guy H. Ashcraft, age 71, of Rising Sun, passed away on Sunday, March 22nd, at 9:30 p.m. at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Guy was born on December 26th, 1937, in Dearborn County, Indiana; the son of Guy H. Ashcraft, Sr., and Dorthea (Oachs) McKinley. He was a 1957 graduate of Rising Sun High School; and worked as a truck driver and laborer at Seagrams Distillery in Lawrenceburg until he retired. He also owned and operated Ashcraft and Son Trucking; and Guy Ashcraft Repair. He was a member of the International Ford Retractable Club; and the Hoosier Skyliner Club.

On November 16th, 1957, he married Betty J. Thies, and to this union arrived a son to bless their home.

Guy is survived by his loving wife, Betty J. (Thies) Ashcraft, of Rising Sun; his mother, Dorthea McKinley, and husband, Paul, of Aurora; and three brothers: Charles L. Ashcraft of Sunman; Norman W. Ashcraft and wife, Claudine, of San Antonio, Texas; and Steven Ashcraft and wife, Glenda, of Aurora, Indiana.

He is also survived by four grandchildren: Jeremy W. Ashcraft and partner, Richele Roberson of Harrison, Ohio; Patricia O’Neal and husband, Joshua, of Harrison, Ohio; Tracy Ashcraft and partner, Kyle Meredith, of Harrison, Ohio; and Rodney Shane Ashcraft of Rising Sun; and two great-grandchildren: Jayce Logan O’Neal and Keygan Wayne Meredith.

Guy was preceded in death by his father, Guy Ashcraft, Sr.; his son, Rodney W. Ashcraft; a brother, Edwin Short; and by a great-grandson: Kolton Lee Ashcraft O’Neal.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday, March 27th) at 11 a.m. at the Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, with the Reverend Jim Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at the Rising Sun New Cemetery.

Visitation will be held tonight (Thursday) at the Markland Funeral Home, from 5-8 p.m.

Johnny A. Zook

Johnny A. Zook, age 27, of Canaan, passed away on Sunday, March 22nd, at 1:06 p.m. at The King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.

Johnny entered this life on March 15th, 1982, in Branch County, Michigan near Montgomery. He was the son of Aaron J. and Mary S. Schwartz Zook; and he had resided in the Canaan community since 1992. He was employed with Richardson Industries in Vevay since 2000. He also helped his family on the family farm.

Johnny will be missed by his parents: Aaron J. and Mary S. Schwartz Zook of Canaan; his sisters: Fannie Delagrange and her husband, Junior, of Linesville, Pennsylvania; Mary Schwartz and her husband, Samuel, of Monroe, Indiana; Katie Zook of Canaan; Becky Zook of Canaan; and his brothers: Samuel Zook and his wife, Linda, of Geff, Illinois; Aaron Zook, Jr. and his wife, Catherine, of Decatur, Indiana; Joseph Zook and his wife, Sarah, of Vevay; Benny Zook and his wife, Salome, of Canaan; David Zook and his wife, Barbara of Canaan; Henry Zook of Canaan; and Daniel Zook of Canaan.

He is also survived by his maternal step grandfather and maternal grandmother: Christian and Katie Schwartz of Berne, Indiana; 14 nephews, 11 nieces, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: Joseph and Fannie Hershberger Zook; his maternal grandfather: Samuel Schwartz; his niece: Catherine Zook.

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, March 25th, 2009, at the Zook Residence, near Canaan. Interment followed in the Old Order Amish Cemetery on Shaw Hollow Road near Canaan.

Visitation was held on Monday and Tuesday at the family residence.

Ricky W. Henry

Ricky W. Henry, age 59, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 at 10:10 a.m. at The King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.

Ricky entered this life on September 16th, 1949, in Madison, the son of Elaine Callahan Henry Andrew and David Henry. He resided nearly all of his life in Madison and attended Madison Consolidated High School. He was of the Protestant faith and attended First Assembly of God Church.

He had worked in the past for Meese Manufacturing and Diekens Bakery. He enjoyed music, going on drives with his family and socializing with his friends. He was a member of the Davita Dialysis family for eight years and had made many friends and relationships there.

Ricky will be missed by his loving and devoted mother: Elaine Callahan Henry Andrew of Madison; his loving brother: Dave A. Henry of Madison; his nephews: Dave Alan Tinker and Jason Alan Henry; his aunts and uncles: Almeetia Zener of Greenwood, Indiana; Marie and Pat Nealis of Daytona Beach, Florida; James Wesley and Mildred Callahan of Vevay; and several cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father: David Henry, who died in 2003; his nephew: Eddie Paul Henry, who died in 2002; his grandparents: Leslie Callahan, who died February 17th, 1948; Wealthy Hanna Callahan, who died January 6th, 1998; and Forest and Audrey Metcalf Henry.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, March 20th, 2009, by Pastor Bob Leach at the Morgan and Nay Funeral Centre, in Madison. Interment followed in the Vevay Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Thursday, March 19th, at the funeral home.

Ryan M. Schwartfigure

Ryan M. Schwartfigure, age 32, of Vevay, formerly of Jefferson, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, March 15th, 2009 at The King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison after suffering head injuries in a motorcycle accident in Milton, Kentucky.

Ryan was born October 14th, 1976, in Geneva, Ohio, the son of George Schwartfigure and Diana (Hessley) Schwartfigure Bemme, and been a life long area resident.

Prior to his death he was employed by Becon Construction. Ryan was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He had many interests and hobbies. He supported the Cleveland Browns professional football team no matter what their record; was an avid “Texas Hold’em” player via Poker Stars on-line; loved riding his Harley-Davidson Fat Boy; and listening to country music. He enjoyed his time spent with family and friends and lived life to the fullest.

On May 14th, 2005 he married the “Love of his Life” Melanie Mead, and together they shared four children.

Ryan will be missed by his wife: Melanie Mead Schwartfigure of Jefferson, Ohio; their sons: Steven Waring of Ashtabula, Ohio; Ryan Maunus of Jefferson, Ohio; Joshua Schwartfigure of Bedford, Texas; and Jamey Schwartfigure of Jefferson, Ohio; his parents: Diana Hessley Schwartfigure Bemme and her husband, Joe, of Jefferson, Ohio; and George Schwartfigure and his wife: Kelly of Conneaut, Ohio.

He will also be missed by his brothers: Benjamin Schwartfigure and his wife, Danise, of Plato, Missouri; Sean Schwartfigure of Killeen, Texas; Justin and Spencer Schwartfigure of Conneaut, Ohio; and William “Bill” Bemme of Conneaut, Ohio; his sisters: Kacie Schwartfigure of Conneaut, Ohio; Samantha Lampela and her husband, Chris, of Conneaut, Ohio; his paternal grandmother: Malvina Schwartfigure of Geneva, Ohio; his maternal grandparents: Richard and Evelyn Hessley of Geneva, Ohio; his nephews: Benjamin, Jr. and Elijah; his step grandmother: Kathleen Drakes of Conneaut, Ohio; and his step grandfather: Pete Peterson of Conneaut, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Al Schwartfigure; and his step-grandfather, Joseph Drakes.

Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, March 21st, 2009, by Reverend Kenneth Roberts at the Ducro Funeral Service in Ashtabula, Ohio. Interment followed in the Ridgeview Cemetery in Ashtabula with full military honors.

Visitation was held on Friday, March 20th, at the funeral home.

Locally, the Morgan-Nay Funeral Centre in Madison was in charge of the arrangements.

Jack Liles

Jack Wayne Liles, age 77, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, March 19th, 2009, at 5:02 p.m. at Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover.

Jack entered this life on August 1st, 1931, in Carroll County, Tennessee, the son of Henry and Ruby Weatherford Liles. He was raised in Humboldt, Tennessee and graduated high school there in 1950.

Jack attended Murray State College for three years. He was inducted into the United States Navy during the Korean War on October 21st, 1950; and he rose to the rank of Corpsman Second Class. He served the NTC, San Diego, California; the USNH, San Diego – Field Medical Training Battalion and the Superior Arms Training Regiment; Camp Pendleton, California – Third Battalion, Fifth Marine Division – First Medical Battalion, First Marine Division Fleet Marine Force. He was wounded twice in the War, earning the Purple Heart Medal and two Silver Stars.

He was honorably discharged on August 12th, 1954.

Jack was united in marriage on May 8th, 1955 in Corinth, Mississippi, to Betty Fuller; and to this union arrived a daughter and two sons to bless their home. Jack was first employed with Brown Shoe Company of St. Louis, Missouri; and rose up through the company to superintendent. He resided for 11 years in Caruthersville, Missouri and was a member of the Lions Club and Kiwanis Club there.

He moved to Madison in 1972, and was employed with the U.S. Shoe Company and served as the Superintendent of the Madison Plant, he later served as the Regional General Manager of Plants. Jack retired in 1998 and began volunteering at The King’s Daughters’ Hospital.

Jack enjoyed membership in the Madison Rotary Club, the Madison Elks Club #525; the Madison Moose Lodge #765 and had served as the drive chairman for the Madison Jefferson County United Way. In his spare time he enjoyed bowling, golf, playing cards, and going to the IU Football games.

Jack will be missed by his loving wife: Betty Fuller Liles of Madison; his loving daughter: Lisa Vaughn of Scottsburg, Indiana; his loving sons: Colonel Donald J. Liles, USMC and his wife, Noriko, stationed in Garmisch, Germany; and Joseph W. Liles and his wife, Nanci of Canaan; his grandchildren: Elizabeth, Yoshi, Emi and Tomo; his sisters-in-law: Lacy Liles of Paducah, Kentucky; Lea Liles of Hernando, Mississippi, and Linda Smith and her husband, Tom, of Memphis, Tennessee; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Ruby Weatherford Liles; and his brothers: Bill, Sam and Tom Liles.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, March 23rd, 2009, by the Reverend Mike Hamby at the Calvary Baptist Church in Madison. Interment followed in the Canaan Cemetery with full military honors.

Visitation was held on Sunday, March 22nd, at the Morgan and Nay Funeral Centre in Madison; and on Monday prior to the beginning of the service at Calvary Baptist Church.
