Robert Lee Tinker

Robert Lee “Pee Wee” Tinker, 62, of Pleasant, passed away at 10:42 p.m. Tuesday, February 15th, 2011, at Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Arley Kelley

Arley Tyrus Kelley, 84, of Fort Pierce, Florida, passed away at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, February 8th, 2011 at his home.

He was born April 28th, 1926, in Bethlehem, Indiana, the son of Cecil Raymond and Anna Inez (Berry) Kelley, who both preceded him in death. He was raised in Jefferson County and was a 1944 graduate of Hanover High School, where he was an outstanding athlete in basketball and baseball. Upon graduating high school he w as inducted into the U.S. Navy on August 16th, 1944, in Madison, rising to the rank of Coxswain during World War II. He served aboard the USS Frament and received the Point System, World War II Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal with One Star and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on June 9th, 1946, at Great Lakes, Illinois. After his service to his country he attended Hanover College for two years and later went to electronics school in Chicago, Illinois, where he was educated on installing and repairing televisions, radios and all types of electronic equipment. He owned his own business in Indianapolis for a number of years, then moved to Vero Beach, Florida, and ran his own business until his retirement. He will be remembered for his love of fishing and playing a good game of golf.

Survivors include his sons, David Kelley and wife Peg of Fort Wayne and Mark Kelley and w ife Millie of Naples, Florida; his daughters, Theresa Newell and husband, Dr. Dick Newell of Hudson, Florida, Janine Bojonoski and husband Jon of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Camille Golden of Vero Beach, Florida; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Patricia Jean “Pat” Buchanan and husband Bob of Indianapolis and Thelma Torrance of Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle Upton; his son, Jeffrey Kelley; his grandson, Mark Kelley, Jr.; his sisters, Helen Brinson, Anna Jo Wells and Lois Holzer; and his brother, Ivan Kelley.

Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Jeanne Winter Monday, February 14th, at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment was in Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison with military rites conducted by the Honor Guard of Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion. Lowry Smith

Lowry Glenn “Lars” Smith, 58, of Madison, passed away at 7:25 p.m. Monday, February 14th, 2011, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in New Albany, Indiana.

She was born November 16th, 1952, in Scottsburg, the son of Lowry Anderson and Ida Gay Smith, Jr. He was raised near Little York and was raised and baptized in the Little York United Methodist Church. He was a 1970 graduate of Salem High School. In 1970, after graduation he joined the Army National Guard w here he served during the Vietnam era until he w as honorably discharged in 1976.

He married Marsha “Popsie” Lyons on October 29th, 1976, in Underwood, Indiana.

He worked for 25 years as a union carpenter for Local 631 in Charlestown, Indiana, 15 years for Force Construction in Columbus and 15 years for Phillips & Smith Construction and Logging in Deputy, along with farming all of his life. He had resided on Deputy Pike in Jefferson County the past 35 years. He enjoyed being outdoors and spending time fishing, hunting, raising cattle, mushroom hunting, socializing with friends and family. He was a man who worked hard, cared greatly for his family and enjoyed cutting up and teasing his friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, Marsha “Popsie” Lyons Smith of Madison; his sons, Travis Glenn Smith of Scottsburg, Clint Wayne Smith of Madison and Kevin Smith of Seymour; his stepson, John Craigmyle of Dayton, Ohio; his mother, Ida Gay Smith of Scottsburg; his sisters, Doris Biddle and husband Jim of Salem, Rhonda King and husband Oliver of New Albany and Joyce Hook Knight and husband Dennis of Salem; his brother, Rick Smith and wife Tammy of Scottsburg; her sisters-in-law, Regenia Turner and husband Kenny of Vevay and Kathy Smith of Scottsburg; his aunt, Barbara Lyons of Las Vegas, Nevada; his grandsons, Trevor Glenn Smith and Joseph Smith; his step-grandsons, Sam Craigmyle and Chris Craigmyle; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lowry Anderson Smith, Jr., on December 31st, 2006; his brother, Michael Lee Smith on November 11th, 2008; his uncle, Michael L. Lyons on November 20th, 2008; his mother-in-law, Marcella Sands Lyons on October 15th, 2003; and his father-in-law, John M. Lyons on October 17th, 1955.

Funeral services will be conducted by Reverend Leon Turner Friday, February 18th, at 11 a.m. at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Burial will be in Pisgah Cemetery near Deputy with military honors conducted at the graveside by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. today (Thursday) and Friday from 9 a.m. until service time.

Carol Jean Smith

Carol Jean (Slack) Smith, 48, of Fort Meyers, Florida, formerly of Pleasant, passed away at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, February 15th, 2011, at Health Park Medical Center in Fort Meyers.

Chester Middleton

Chester Ray Middleton, 64, of Bennington, passed away at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, February 13th, 2011, at his home.

He was born June 24th, 1946, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, the son of John W. and Alleen (Fey) Middleton, who both preceded him in death. He was raised in Switzerland County since the age of six and was a 1965 graduate of Vevay High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged.

He was united in marriage on November 2nd, 1973, at the Mt. Sterling Baptist Church to Janet Willhoite Robbins.

He was employed by the Amish community to provide transportation for several years. He was formerly employed at Randall Textron in Vevay, and M&M Towing in Madison for several years. He was raised in the Switzerland Baptist Church in Vevay. He will be remembered for his love of NASCAR, college basketball, fishing, socializing and tinkering with Ford automobiles.

Survivors include his wife Janet Middleton of Bennington; his daughters, Kristy Middleton and companion Bryan Johnson of Vevay, Melissa Stamper and husband Mike of near Moorefield, Robin Bovard of Vevay and Marie Garrett and husband Porter of Ghent, Kentucky; his son, Mark Robbins and wife Charity of Vevay; his grandchildren, Raschel Bovard, Lacey Johnson, Kelsey Bovard, Damon Robbins, Morgan Stamper, and Justin Johnson; his great-grandson, Benjamin Bovard; his brother, Richard “Dick” Middleton of Dillsboro; his sister, Elizabeth Chamberlin of Oroville, California; his adopted sister, Donna Walker of Vevay; and nephews and nieces, Richard, Jason, Brian, Jarred, Amy, Nele and Bill, Jr.

He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Ann Middleton; and his brother, Bill Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted by Reverend Patrick Lanman at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, February 17th) at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in Vevay Cemetery with military rites conducted at the graveside by Vevay American Legion Post 185 and Vevay VFW Post 5396. Elmer Lewis

Elmer E. “Gene” Lewis, 83, of Madison, passed away at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday, February 8th, 2011, at Kentuckiana Medical Center in Clarksville, Indiana.

He was born September 27th, 1927, in Ripley County, the son of the late Elmer Lloyd and Wilma (Pelsor) Lewis. He resided his early life near Rexville and Bennington. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 6th, 1945, rising to the rank of Private First Class during World War II in the 95 Base Engineers Equipment Group. He was honorably discharged on March 2nd, 1947, from Fort Sheridan, Illiinois, receiving the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Japan Medal.

He was united in marriage on June 30th, 1951, in Rising Sun, to Matilda Hoeppner. This union was blessed with four sons and two daughters. They enjoyed nearly 40 years of marriage together until her death on Januaray 13th, 1991.

He was employed early in life with the Charlestown Ammunition Plant and Jefferson Proving Ground. He later worked for Hitz and Volz Flower Shop and Green House for nine years. He then worked for the next 30 years with the Madison Consolidated School System in maintenance, custodian and bus driver duties, retiring in 1993. He attended Wirt Baptist Church and was a member of Carrollton Pioneer Antique Tractor Club. He enjoyed tinkering with old tractors, gardening, his grandchildren and woodworking.

Survivors include his sons, William “Bill” Lewis and wife Mary of Madison, Wayne Lewis of Madison, Steven Lewis and wife Shelly of Madison, and Terry Lewis and wife Karen of Madison; his daughters, Debbie Miles and husband Randal of Sanders, Kentucky and Vicki Wehner and husband John of Madison; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Mary Jean Hoeppner of Madison, Media Lewis of Columbus, Janie Lewis of Deputy, Agnes Lewis of Madison, Frances Lewis of Westport, Mary Hoeppner and Ann Newton, both of Eckerty, Indiana; his aunts, Violet Pelsor of Charlestown, Indiana, Evaleen Knudson of Holton; his grandchildren, Neil and Ellen Lewis; Amy and Eric Chase; Jenny and Frank Wilson; Jeremy and Kristen Lewis; Steven Lewis, Jr.; Michelle Lewis, Courtney Miles, Ryan Miles, Ashley Wehner, Kyle Wehner and Mike and Becky Cornett; his great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Izabelle, Trevor, Willilam, Alexandria, Aaron, Andrew, Sidney, Colton, Brianna, Desirae, Isaiah, Kian, Corey, Justn and Christopher; several step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was also preceded in death by his grandsons, Christopher and Matthew Miles; his brothers, Donald, Leland, Carroll, Paul, Frederick and Addison Lewis; his sister, Kathleen Lewis; his brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Jeanette Conard and Les Newton.

Funeral services were conducted by Reverend Ron Lee Saturday, February 12th, at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment was in Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison with full military honors conducted at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Chapel by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion. Sandy Demaree

Sandra K. “Sandy” (Darbro) Demaree, 62, of near Moorefield, passed away at 1:30 a.m. Friday, February 11th, 2011, at The Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison.

She was born September 5th, 1948, in Switzerland County, the daughter of the late Harold and Vivian (Ramseyer) Darbro. Her mother died when she was seven years old and her dad married Geneva who raised her like her own. She was raised in Switzerland County and attended Switzerland County High School.

She was united in marriage on August 15th, 1970, in Vevay to Jack R. Demaree. This union was blessed with three daughters.

She worked as a nurses aide for four years at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. She then worked for Reliance Electric in Madison as a machine operator from 1979-1995 when she became disabled. She was a member of Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Madison VFW Post 1969 Auxiliary. She was a member of Fredonia Baptist Church on Tapps Ridge in Switzerland County and atttended Macedonia Baptist Church near Moorefield. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed all of her time spent with her family.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 41 years, Jack R. Demaree of Madison; her daughters, Brooke Demaree of Madison, Mandy Boyd and husband Tim of Hanover and Jackie James and husband Brian of Madison; her sister, Barbara Jean Keith and husband Roy of Vevay; her brother, Tim Darbro and wife Julie of Vevay; her grandchildren, Brandon Demaree, Tanner Jones and Brooklyn James; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Mike Barnes Tuesday, February 15th, at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Burial was in Macedonia Cemetery near Moorefield. Ruth Martin

Ruth Martin, 85, of Rising Sun, passed away Sunday, February 13th, 2011, at The Waters of Rising Sun.

She was born in Switzerland County on April 16th, 1925, the daughter of Brack and Rosa (Webster) Johns. She was a business owner with her late husband Leonard Martin and earlier worked at the Aurora Chair Company. She was a member of Rising Sun United Methodist Church, Rising Sun Eastern Star, Progressive Home Extension Club, Red Hat Club, Republican Women’s Club, Post 59 American Legion Auxiliary and Agape Club at United Methodist Church.

Surviving is her son Terry (Karen) Robinson and her daughter Janet (Garry) Holder of Rising Sun; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters; her brothers, Robert Johns and Cecil Johns; and her sister-in-law, Wanda Johns.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 15th, in Humphrey-Taylor-Detmer Funeral Home in Rising Sun with burial in Rising Sun Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rising Sun United Methodist Church or Rising Sun Eastern Star.

Shirley Elston

Shirley M. Elston, 73, of Canaan, passed away at 3:27 a.m. Monday, February 14th, 2011, at Kentuckiana Medical Center in Clarksville, Indiana.

She was born June 15th, 1937, in Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Clarence F. and Opal L. (Brooks) Elston. She resided in Jefferson County all of her life and was a 1955 graduate of Central High School. She was employed for 32 years as a secretary in the food service department of the Madison State Hospital. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church near Moorefield for many years. She was a member of Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church near Canaan. She enjoyed being a docent at Madison State Hospital Museum. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, crocheting, working puzzles and was an avid George Strait fan and was a member of his fan club. She enjoyed being a devoted mother, grandmother and friend. She had a great Santa Claus collection and found great enjoyment in caring for her yard.

Survivors include her sons, Jeffrey Lynn Lockridge and wife Katie of Canaan and Gregory Lee Lockridge and wife Angie of Shelbyville; her daughter, Betty Lou Cordle of Madison; her brothers, Dillion Elston and wife Dawn of Anderson and Keith Elston and wife Erana of Charlestown, Indiana; her sister-in-law, Judy Elston of Madison; her brother-in-law, Richard Layne of London, Ohio; her aunt, Lola Wood of Florida; her uncle, Raymond Elston of Shelby, North Carolina; her grandchildren, Jarrett Cordle and fiancee Decila; Brandon Lockridge; Logan Lockridge and wife Mary; Miranda Lockridge; her step-great-grandchildren, Zackary, Gracie and Calib.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Linda Parker on May 28th, 1990, and Donna Layne in 2010; and her brother, Earl D. Elston on September 24th, 1997.

Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Ed Roberts at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, February 17th) at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Burial will be in Pleasant Cemetery. Dorothy Johnson

Dorothy M. (Gray) Johnson, 78, of Rexville, Indiana, passed away at 6:33 p.m. Friday, February 11th, 2011, at Hanover Health & Rehab Center in Hanover.

She was born April 23rd, 1932, in Brooksburg, the daughter of the late Eben and Rosamond (Ryker) Gray. She was raised in Brooksburg and was a 1950 graduate of Central High School.

She was united in marriage on February 13th, 1954, in Madison, to Clarence K. Johnson, who died January 30th, 1998. This union was blessed with one daughter and one son.

She was employed with Meyers Manufacuring from 1950-1956. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of West Fork Baptist Church in Ripley County. She had resided near Rexville since 1957. She enjoyed word search puzzles, cooking, sewing and working in the yard.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie J. Arbuckle and husband Ray of Hanover; her son, Steve D. Johnson of Rexville, Indiana; her grandson, Steven Lucas of Rexville; her sister, Antoinette “Tootsie” Reed of Moorefield; her step-grandchildren, Rick Arbuckle and wife Polly of Deputy, Tammy Napier and husband Keith of Austin, Russ Arbuckle and wife Sherry of Scottsburg; her step-great-grandchildren, Michelle Richey, Danielle Richey, Audrey Arbuckle and Luke Arbuckle; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Bernadine Gray; and her brother, Garland “Bus” Gray.

Graveside services were conducted by Clay Arbuckle Tuesday, February 15th, with burial in Grandview Memorial Gardens near Madison. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
