Manford Smith

Manford Hayes “Buck” Smith, 70, of Vevay, passed away at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, December 1st, 2010, at Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay.

He was born June 21st, 1940, in Gratz, Kentucky, the son of Nim and Pauline (Beverly) Smith, who both preceded him in death. He was raised in Gratz and had resided in Vevay since 1972.

He was united in marriage on November 25th, 1967, at the Mount Sterling Baptist Church to Polly June Martin. Unto this union a son arrived to bless their home. They enjoyed nearly 18 years of marriage until her death on August 11th, 1985. On May 27th, 1987, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Gullion in Nashville, Tennessee.

He was a truck driver for the Switzerland County Highway Department and retired as custodian of the Switzerland County Courthouse after 20 years of service. He was a member of Gratz Baptist Church. He will be remembered for his love of country music and western movies.

Survivors include his son, Robert Nim “Robbie” Smith and wife Peggy of East Enterprise; his stepsons, William Gullion and wife Sandy of Deputy and Wayne Gullion and wife Julia of Carrollton, Kentucky; his stepdaughters, Mary Pohlman of Patriot, Georgia Richards and husband Troy of Vevay, and Karen Peelman and husband Louis of Vevay; his granddaughter, Anabel Smith of East Enterprise; Evelyn Smith of Vevay, who cared for him; his brothers, Donald Winters of Morning View, Kentucky and Oldham Smith of Owenton, Kentucky; his sisters, Nannie Presnell and Glenna Sue Smith, both of Frankfort, Kentucky, Wanda Browning of Pleasureville, Kentucky and Wilma Kinman of Carrollton, Kentucky; several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Vera M. Towles; and his brother, Albert Lee Smith

Funeral services were conducted by Reverend Ronald Sandidge Tuesday, December 7th, at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Vevay Cemetery. Donald Springer

Donald Joseph Springer, 79, of Vevay, passed away at 11:43 p.m. Wednesday, December 1st, 2010, at his home.

He was born July 18th, 1931, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Joseph and Rose Ann (Meisberger) Springer, who both preceded him in death. He was raised in Cincinnati and had resided in Switzerland County since 1971. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a commercial roofer for Local #42 in Cincinnati for 50 years. He was a member of Vevay American Legion Post 185 and Plum Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughters, Donna Jo Nelson of Cincinnati, Rebecca Carol Meyer of Vevay, Debra Faye Springer of Vevay, and Colleen Rose Cox and husband James of Cincinnati; his sons, Gary Lee Springer of Vevay, Donald Timothy Springer of Vevay, Kenneth Springer of Vevay, Thomas Richard Springer of Vevay, Douglas Laurel Springer and wife Beverly of Osgood, Philip Wayne Springer and wife Robin of Vevay, and Joseph Garland Springer and wife Gwen of North Vernon; his sister, Betty Springer of Harrison, Indiana; his brother, Robert Springer of Center Square; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Marion Thomas and Dorothy Martin.

Funeral services were conducted by Reverend Mike Jones Saturday, December 4th, at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Vevay Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Honor Guard of Vevay American Legion Post 185 and Vevay VFW Post 5396. Harriet Koons

Harriet Ilene Koons, 92, of Rising Sun, passed away at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 2nd, 2010, at The Waters of Rising Sun.

She was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana on October 24th, 1918, the daughter of the late Blanche (Weir) Foxworthy and Paul Foxworthy. She was a member of Rising Sun First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Monday Night Homemakers Club for over 50 years. She retired after working as a cook for the Rising Sun-Ohio County School Corporation in Rising Sun for 16 years. She loved to crochet, sew, read and spend time with her family.

Survivors include her daughters, Patty J. Romans (Leon) of Aurora and Mary K. Reynolds (Clarence) of Seymour; her sons, Paul William “Bill” Koons (Dorothy) of Rising Sun and Daniel L. Koons (Beverly) of Rising Sun; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and her sister-in-law, Mary Koons.

Funeral services were conducted by Reverend Jim Jenkins Monday, December 6th, at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun. Burial was in Eastview Cemetery in Patriot. Memorial contributions may be made to Ohio County Rescue or Rising Sun First Baptist Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Ervin Walton

Ervin Preston Walton, 81, of Rising Sun, passed away at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 7th, 2010, at Woodland Hills Care Center in Lawrenceburg.

He was born in Ohio County on June 10th, 1929, the son of the late Bertha (Reamer) and Robert Preston Walton. He was a graduate of Dillsboro High School, Class of 1947. He was a farmer and the sexton of Rising Sun New Cemetery for 23 years, retiring in 1992. He also worked for Monsanto, Seagram’s and Aurora Casket Company. He was a member of Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher.

On July 24th, 1948, in Rising Sun, he married Dorothy (Adams) Walton who survives. They shared their lives together for over 62 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a faithful Christian.

In addition to his loving wife Dorothy, he is survived by his daughter, Penny Robinson and husband Randy of Rising Sun; his son, Paul Walton and wife Darlene of Rising Sun; his grandchildren, Mark Walton, Robin Bruce (Paul), Jodi Keith (Brian), all of Rising Sun, Brandy Becker of Lawrenceburg and Tawnya Karsteter (Chris) of Greendale; his great-grandchildren, Alex and Cody Bruce, Jackson and Dylan Karsteter, and Brody and Jacob Becker; his sister, Edith Koons of Rising Sun; and his brother, Everett Walton and wife Janet of Rising Sun.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Cleveland Walton; and two infant sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted by Brothers Jack Howard and Davon Huss Friday, December 10th, at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ, Aurora. Friends are invited to call Friday from 11 a.m. to service time at the church. Burial will be in Rising Sun New Cemetery. The family requests donations to Dearborn County Hospice, Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or Whitewater Christian Camp. Jewell Stopher

Jewell Blackwell (Harris) Stopher, 79, of Vevay, passed away at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, December 8th, 2010, at her home.
