Dortha Mae Curry

Dortha Mae (Brown) Curry, 86, of Rising Sun, passed away at 3:15 a.m. on Monday, August 24th, 2015 at Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Dortha was born in Switzerland County on May 8th, 1929, a daughter of the late Lucy (Stopher) and Elmer Brown. She grew up in Switzerland County and attended Vevay High School, graduating with the class of 1947.

On December 28th, 1946 at the Rising Sun Methodist Parsonage, she married Henry Paul “Pee Wee” Curry, who passed away on January 29th, 2013. Dot and Pee Wee were married over 66 love-filled years.

Dot worked in the Ohio County Treasurer’s office for 16 years , eight of those years as Treasurer. She also worked in the FHA office; the Welfare Office; for Phillips Grocery in Aberdeen; and her first job was as a waitress at Brown’s Restaurant in East Enterprise. Her last job was with Rising Sun Senior Housing.

Dot was a faithful member of the Rising Sun First Baptist Church, and also a member of the Democrat Women’s Club. She liked to bowl and was in a league for several years, and played softball till the age of 42. She also liked to garden and work in her flower beds. Dot’s favorite thing over the years was to watch her children, her grandchildren and great grandchildren playing sports or any activity they were involved with.

Dortha is survived by two daughters, Paula K. (P.G.) Gentrup, of Rising Sun and Jodi (Bryce) Kendrick, of Rising Sun; by daughter-in-law Margaret Curry of Columbus, Indiana; by grandson Steve Curry (Patty) of Seymour, Indiana; by granddaughter, Melanie Klakamp (Jeff) of Seymour, Indiana; by grandson Jonathan Curry of Columbus, Indiana; by grandson Brian Gentrup (Annette) of Brownsburg, Indiana; by granddaughter Kelli Gentrup-Pettit (Richard) of Moores Hill, Indiana; by grandson Ryan Kendrick of Rising Sun; and by granddaughters Jenna and Emily Kendrick of Rising Sun.

She is also survived by great grandchildren: Matthew Curry, Ericia Milliken, Kati Curry, Conner and Cameron Klakamp, Kaden and Alexandra Gentrup, Grady and Carli Walter, Coleton Pettit; and by great- great-grandchildren Alexx Milliken and Tristen Milliken. Dot is also survived by a sister, Mary “Libby” E. Markland, of Rising Sun; by sisters-in-law Marjorie Brown of Bennington, Ethel Althoff of Vevay, and Tanya Curry of Quercus Grove.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, PeeWee Curry; by a son, Michael “Mickey” Curry; by a sister, Jean Tyler; by brothers, James Brown and Earl Wayne Brown; by great grandchildren, Sara Lyn and Mary Jo Walter; by brothers-in-law, Clinton, James and Dale Curry, Ed Caplinger, Carl Martin, Herschel Tyler and Sam Markland; and by sisters-in-law Loretta Curry and Judy Brown; and by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul and Susie Curry.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 29th at the Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun with Reverend Jim Jenkins officiating. Friends are invited to call Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rising Sun New Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Rising Sun First Baptist Church or the Ohio County Community Foundation, where a scholarship will be established in Pee Wee and Dot’s name.

Wilford ‘Bill’ Dickerson

Wilford Conway “Bill” Dickerson, Sr., age 92, of Patriot, died at 8:06 a.m., on Friday, August 21st, 2015, at his residence.

Bill entered this life on November 17th, 1922, in Aberdeen, Indiana, the loving son of the late Ira Emmett and Gertrude (Nix) Dickerson. He was raised in Owenton, Kentucky where he attended school.

Bill was inducted into the United States Army on January 25th, 1943 in Louisville, Kentucky, serving during World War II. He earned the EAME Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Bill was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant on December 12th, 1945 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana.

Bill was united in marriage on June 10th, 1944, in Columbus, Kansas, to the late, Jewell Ray “Judy” Clemons, and to this union arrived three sons: Rod, Sonny and Randy; and two daughters, Judith and Toy, to bless their home. Bill and Judy shared nearly 69 loving years of marriage together until Judy passed away on February 23rd, 2013.

Bill was a farmer at heart and enjoyed farming most of his life. He also was a logger for many years. Bill co-owned and co-operated with his loving wife, the Phillips 66 Gas Station, from 1964 to 1975, the Patriot Carry Out and the Pool Room – all in Patriot. He resided most of his life in the Patriot community.

Bill was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Olive Branch Baptist Church. Bill enjoyed antiquing, woodworking, refinishing furniture, spending time with his family, mowing and keeping a meticulous lawn.

Bill will be dearly missed by his daughters: Judith Langford and her husband: Mick of Reno, Nevada; and Priscilla “Toy” Smith and her husband: Gardy of near Patriot; by his sons: Wilford Conway “Sonny” Dickerson, Jr., and his wife: Kelli of Rising Sun; Rod Dickerson and his wife: Sue of Vevay; and Randy Dickerson and his wife: Michelle of Vevay.

He will also be missed by his grandchildren: Donna, Stephanie, Brian, Kami, Carol, Ginger, Babee, Troy, Daniele, Derek, Rachel, Tracy, Mark, Eric, Erin, Kristen, Staci, Shea, Jesse, Jade and Joshua; and by his 46-great-grandchildren and 28-great-great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his sister-in-law: Pansy Bradford and her husband: Wesley of Cookson Bend, Oklahoma; and his several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Ira Emmett and Gertrude (Nix) Dickerson; his loving wife of nearly 69 years: Jewell Ray “Judy” (Clemons) Dickerson, who died on February 23rd, 2013; his grandson: Shawn David Dickerson; his granddaughter: Jewell Ann Dickerson; his great-grandson: Joshua Tyler Detoff; his sisters: Geraldine Konradi and Arahwanna Dickerson; and his brother: James Earl Dickerson.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, August 25th, 2015, by Pastor Patrick Lanman, at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay. Interment followed in the Eastview Cemetery in Patriot.

Full military rites were conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396 at the cemetery.

Friends called on Monday, August 24th, at the funeral home.

Ernestine Ralston

Ernestine G. Hart Ralston , age 100, of Madison, Indiana (near Manville), died on Sunday, August 23rd, 2015, at 4:30 a.m. at her grandson’s residence near Madison.

Ernestine entered this life on April 17th, 1915 in Soapville in Switzerland County. She was raised in Switzerland County, and was a 1933 graduate of Vevay High School.

On June 20th, 1936 she was united in marriage to Robert L. Ralston at the Caledonia Presbyterian Church near Moorefield. This happy union of 59 years was blessed with one daughter: Shelby Jean. The family made its home back of Manville on Brushy Fork Road on a farm that she would spend the rest of her life on. She was a farmer and homemaker all of her life.

Ernestine was the oldest living member of the Caledonia Presbyterian Church at the time of her death. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening, cooking, caring for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren. Ernestine had been lovingly cared for by her daughter since the death of her husband and for the past two months with the help of her grandson, Gary and his wife, Wanda.

Ernestine will be missed by her loving daughter: Shelby Jean Imel of Madison; her grandson: Gary Wayne Imel and his wife, Wanda of Madison; her great-grandchildren: Justin, Derek, Suzannah, Cassidy, and Cody; and by her great- great-grandchildren: Hannah Marie, Collin Lee, Ronald, Luke, Brantley Gene and Tatum Grace.

She will also be missed by her nephews: Clair O’Connell, Evon Gray and Leon Gray.

She was preceded in death by her father, George E. Hart, who died in 1974; her mother, Bessie F. Stout Hart, who died in 1963; her sister: Cordelia Hart O’Connell, who died in 1987; her husband of 59 years: Robert L. Ralston, who died on July 23rd, 1995; her grandson, Ronald Gene Imel, who died on March 13th, 2001; her son-in-law, Gerald E. Imel, who died on December 7th, 2012; her nephew: Mike O’Connell; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Van O’Connell, Glenn and Pearl Ralston; Margaret Ralston Gray and Maurice Gray.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, August 25th, 2015, by Pastor K.C. Banta at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison. Interment followed in the Caledonia Cemetery near Moorefield.

Friends called on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Leon Berner

Leon H. Berner, 82, of Cross Plains passed away at 5:38 a.m. on Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison.

He was born at home near Pleasant on July 31st, 1933, the son of Clifford and Wilma Nolker Berner. He was married to Esther Knigga at St. Peters Lutheran Church at Bear Branch on February 20th, 1960 and the two shared 55 years of marriage together.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Berner; one son: Michael Berner and wife Linda of Cross Plains; two daughters: Debbie Berner of Camby, and Kathy Daugherty and husband Rob of Vevay; seven grandchildren: Erica Bechman and husband Kyle of Cross Plains; Ashley Crafton of Indianapolis; Natalie Wheeler and husband Josh of Vevay; Kevin Berner of Louisville; Jenna Kaylor and husband Jason of Vincennes; Steven Berner of New York; and Dakota Crafton of Cross Plains; six great-grandchildren: Jesse and Easton Bechman; Addison Wheeler; and Logan, Ava, and AJ Crafton.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Leon was a farmer, and had retired after 17 years as an inspector with the Indiana Department of Transportation in Seymour. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served aboard the USS Sperry with the US Navy.

Leon was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dewberry and was former president of the AAL. He had also served on the Switzerland County 4-H Fair Board.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 25th at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dewberry with Rick Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation was held on Monday, August 24th, at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles, and also on Tuesday prior to the funeral services.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.

Lionel Turner

Lionel E. Turner, 88, of Rising Sun, passed away Thursday, August 20th, 2015 at The Waters of Rising Sun.

He was born on November 3rd, 1926 to the late Lawrence and Susie (Scudder) Turner in Switzerland County.

His mother, Susie (Scudder) Turner passed away shortly after Lionel was born, and he was raised by his beloved grandparents: Harry and Annabelle Scudder. Annabelle was always remembered by Lionel as “Mom.”

Lionel attended grade school and high school in Switzerland County. At age 14, he was baptized and became a member of the New Liberty Baptist Church.

In February of 1945, Lionel was inducted into the Army, spending nine months in the Pacific. In September of 1946, he was honorably discharged with the rank of T-5. Lionel returned home and helped farm where he grew up. Lionel was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion in Rising Sun.

On December 10th, 1949 he was married to Alberta Stoops of Switzerland County, and they celebrated 63 years together. To this union, four children were born: Richard Turner and wife, Bev, of Rising Sun; Donna Perry and husband, Leon, of Versailles; Brenda Greene and husband, Poncho, of Cincinnati, and Mark Turner and wife, Gayle, of East Enterprise.

Eight grandchildren were welcomed into his life with much love shown to each: Tracy (Kevin) Mess, Micah (Justin) Shuey, Chrissy Deck, Brent (Sarah) Perry, Ashley Turner, Britton Hempfling, Matthew Hempfling, and Nicholas Hempfling. Lionel Turner had four great-grandchildren with another soon to be born in September.

Lionel was preceded in death by his brothers: Harry (Gay) Turner; Warren (Marian) Turner; Donald Turner; and Stanley Turner; by one sister: Wilma Turner; and a step-brother Paul Scudder.

Lionel leaves behind brothers Larry (Jenny) Turner and Frank (Peg) Turner; sisters: Vandora Stuard; Rita (Jack) Waltz; Judy Maddox; brother-in-law Arthur (Ruth) Stoops; and sister-in-law Margaret Turner.

Lionel was a farmer and worked for Roy Turner for over 25 years, having to retire in 1992 due to a massive heart attack. Lionel and Alberta spent retirement at the Hoosier Boy apartments and enjoyed walking and visiting with family and friends. Lionel was a wonderful father and friend and will be missed by all.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, August 24th at the Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun. Visitation was held on Sunday; and burial with military honors was at Rising Sun New Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Rising Sun American Legion Post #59.

Louis Bullock

Louis Ray Bullock, age 64, of Vevay, died at 2:40 p.m., on Saturday, August 22nd, 2015, at the Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Louis entered this life on February 9th, 1951, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the loving son of the late William Robert and Vonnie (Smith) Bullock. He was raised in Indianapolis, and was a 1969 graduate of Warren Central High School. He received his Electrician Degree from Ivy Tech Community College in Madison, where he was also an instructor.

Louis was inducted into the United States Air Force in January of 1972, and was later honorably discharged.

Louis was united in marriage on June 17th, 1972, to Gayla Chase, at the Switzerland Baptist Church in Vevay; and to this union arrived two daughters: Jaime and Jennifer, to bless their home. Louis and Gayla shared 43 loving years of marriage together until his death.

Louis was a former employee for the U.S. Shoe Factory and Randall Textron, Inc., in Vevay; and for Dayton Walther in Warsaw, Kentucky. Louis was an electrician for the Coca-Cola Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, retiring in 2013 after 14 years of service.

He was the Chief Engineer #315 for the Jeff-Craig Volunteer Fire Department in Vevay. Louis was currently the President of the Vevay-Switzerland County Lions Club. He was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185. Louis attended the Switzerland Baptist Church in Vevay.

Louis will be remembered for his love of fishing and camping.

He will also be missed by his brothers: Joe Bullock of North Fort Meyers, Florida and Rob Bullock of Vevay; his father-in-law: James H. Chase of Vevay; his brother-in-law: Lawrence Chase and his wife: Marsha of Vevay; his sister-in-law: Holly Robinson and her husband: Richard of Madison; and his several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: William Robert and Vonnie (Smith) Bullock; his mother-in-law: Mary Lou Chase, who died on July 6th, 2013; his brother: Norman Bullock; his sister: Betty Delph; and his brother-in-law: Steven Wayne Chase, who died on December 20th, 1969.

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, August 26th, by Reverend Wayne Daugherty at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay. Interment followed in the Vevay Cemetery.

Friends called on Tuesday at the funeral home; and the Jeff-Craig Volunteer Fire Department and the Vevay-Switzerland County Lions Club conducted special services.

Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185, the Vevay VFW Post #5396 and the United States Air Force Ceremonial Unit.

Sharon Ann Ballard

Sharon Ann (Blodgett) Ballard, age 69, of Vevay, passed away at 4:36 p.m. on Saturday, August 22nd, 2015, at the Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Sharon entered this life on July 14th, 1946, in Burlington, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Wilson and Shirley (Quimby) Blodgett. She was raised in Burlington, Wisconsin, where she was a 1964 graduate of the Burlington High School.

Sharon was united in marriage on July 14th, 1984, in Kansasville, Wisconsin, to the late, Paul J. Ballard. Sharon and Paul shared 30 years of marriage together until Paul passed away on September 2nd, 2014.

She was a former machine operator for various places in Wisconsin for several years. Sharon and Paul resided in the Racine, Wisconsin community until moving to the Florence, Indiana community in 1999. After Paul passed away, Sharon moved to Vevay in October of 2014. Sharon was an employee for the Swiss Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Vevay. She was a member of the Florence Relay for Life, and attended the Florence Church of Christ. Sharon enjoyed crocheting, but most of all working puzzle books.

Sharon will be missed by her step-sons: Larry Ballard and his wife: Sherry of Huntington, West Virginia; Melvin Ballard and his wife: Jennifer of Moores Hill, Indiana; and John Ballard of Racine, Wisconsin; by her grandchildren: Crystal Pelfrey, Kara Hansell, Anna Ballard, Miranda Ballard and Kevin Ballard; and her great-grandchildren: Cory Hansell, Karleigh Hansell, Ryan Ballard and Cannan Hansell.

She will also be missed by her brother: Robert Blodgett and his wife: Sandy of Burlington, Wisconsin; her sisters: Karen Larson of Burlington, Wisconsin; and Delores Cole and her husband: Charles of Racine, Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Wilson and Shirley (Quimby) Blodgett; her husband of 30 years: Paul J. Ballard, who died September 2nd, 2014; her son: Jeffrey Duvall, who died on July 6th, 2012; her daughter: Marjorie Duvall, who died on July 10th, 1969; her great-grandson: Cole Hansell, who died on August 23rd, 2010; and her brother: Gerald Blodgett.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, August 31st, 2015, at 11 a.m., by Brother Roy Duckworth, at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay. Interment will follow in the Florence Cemetery.

Friends may call 10-11 a.m., on Monday, August 31st, at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home.
