Donald Leap
Donald Dale “Donnie” Leap, age 68, of Vevay, passed away at 6:40 a.m. on Thursday, December 24th, 2015, at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.
Donnie entered this life April 9th, 1947, in Milan, the son of the late Harley “Hod” and Clara Rebecca “Reba” (Adams) Leap. He was raised in Switzerland County, and attended the Vevay High School.
Donnie was inducted into the United States Navy on September 20th, 1965, in Indianapolis, Indiana, serving during the Vietnam War. He earned the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with two stars; and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with device. Donnie was released from active duty and transferred to Naval Reserve with the rank of Airman on September 19th, 1968 in Bainbridge, Maryland.
Donnie was honorably discharged from the reserves on September 19th, 1971.
Donnie was married on April 26th, 1969, at the Mt. Sterling Baptist Church by Reverend Ronald Sandidge to Virginia Ann “Ginny” Martin, and to this union arrived two daughters: Marci and Michelle to bless their home. Donnie and Ginny shared 46 loving years of marriage together until his death.
He farmed on Tapps Ridge from 1969 to 1976. He was employed for Aurora Casket Company as a brusher and finisher in Aurora, Indiana for five years. Donnie was a former carpenter for John Mishler’s Construction for two years. Donnie worked along side his brother, Jimmy Leap, for Leap Construction for 20 years.
Donnie retired as an engineer in the Facilities Department on June 16th, 2015 from the Belterra Casino and Resort after 10 1/2 years of service.
He was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185. He was raised in the Long Run Baptist Church near Moorefield. He enjoyed his Sunday drives listening to Christian music. He also loved listening to old country music, especially his idol, Gene Watson. Donnie took great pleasure in raising and training beagles to hunt. He also enjoyed rabbit and coon hunting and fishing. Donnie was always willing to lend a helping hand to his family and friends.
Donnie will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 46 years: Virginia Ann “Ginny” (Martin) Leap of Vevay; his daughters: Marci Lynn Leap of Florence and Michelle Lynn Carfield and her husband: Joe of Vevay; by his grandchildren: James Dustin Carfield and his wife: Kelsey of Bennington; Petty Officer 3rd Class Kali Carfield and her spouse: Katelyn of Bremerton, Washington; Courtney Ryan Carfield of Vevay; and Kylie Jo Carfield of Vevay.
He will also be dearly missed by his brother: James Cecil “Jimmy” Leap of Vevay; his sister-in-law: Ruth Lohide of East Enterprise; his nephews: James Jeffery Leap of Michigan; Roy Allan Leap and his wife: Julie of Vevay; and Steve Lohide and his wife: Norma of Mesa, Arizona; by his nieces: Katina Carter-Ray of Vevay; Kathleen Bolton of Vevay; Lisa Creech and her husband: Jim of Aurora, Indiana; Susan Darling and her companion: Duane Covington of East Enterprise; and Kim Bennis of St. Louis, Missouri; and his numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Harley “Hod” Leap, who died on March 3rd, 1982; and Clara Rebecca “Reba” (Adams) Leap, who died on April 29th, 1998; by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: John and Betty (Martin) Mishler, Charles Lohide, Janie (Beach) Leap and Jackie (Skirvin) Leap.
Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, December 30th, 2015, at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043.
Full military rites and interment were be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185, the Vevay VFW Post #5396 and the Fort Knox Ceremonial Unit at the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
Friends were invited to call on Tuesday, December 29th, 2015, at the funeral home.

Harvey Browning
Harvey D. Browning, 90, of Henderson, Nevada, passed away peacefully on December 9th, 2015, with his family at his side.
He was born in 1925, in Vevay, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Harvey spent most of his adult life overseas on Guam and Okinawa, Japan working in the automotive and insurance industry, retiring in Henderson, Nevada, 16 years ago.
As anyone who ever met Harvey knows, his motto was “I’ve never met a stranger.”
He will be remembered for his love, loyalty, generosity and kindness to all who were lucky enough to cross his path.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Donna; daughters, Debbie (Jeff) Moore and Patti (Don) Falkner; son, Michael (Tambra) Browning; his sister, Lavern Smith; and grandchildren.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Harvey’s memory.
Terry Cook
Terry Lloyd Cook, 60, of Hauula, Hawaii, died in Kahuka Medical Center on November 26th, 2015.
He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 12th, 1955 and lived in Indiana until he enlisted in the military. Terry was a veteran of the United States Army.
Terry grew up in Sellersburg and graduated in 1973 from Silver Creek High School. While Terry was an all-around athlete, he was especially outstanding in baseball. As a left hand pitcher, he was able to easily pick players off first, and was known for his ability to keep the other team from scoring.
Terry was skilled in many crafts but was defined in Oahu as a master carpenter. Hobbies and other interests included but were not limited to playing backgammon, ping pong, bowling, and hunting squirrels and rabbit. He loved fast cars particularly his ’69 Camaro SS. When returning to the mainland, he loved to drive his father’s ’77 Thunderbird. Terry was also a crossword puzzle genius.
Terry dearly loved his family (Cook Ohana) and his favorite phrase to family when saying so long was LCB and Out (Love you, See you, Bye). Terry will be missed by many.
Terry is survived by his wife of 33 years, Antoinette; sons Joby (Emily), Jacob (Kirsten), Nickolas (Emily), and Taylor (Pua); mother Lois Kelley Cook; sister Bonnia Cook Fouts (Bob); brother Kelly Layne Cook (Kathi); many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Lloyd Cook.
Though his life was celebrated in his hometown in Hawaii, it will once again be celebrated on the mainland at the Sellersburg (Indiana) Moose Family Center, 1040 S. Indiana Avenue, on Saturday, January 9th, 2016 from 1-3 p.m. All friends and family are welcome.
Mary Davenport
Mary Belle (Davis) Davenport, age 94, of Sellersburg, Indiana, formerly of Markland, passed away surrounded by her loving family at 10:54 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29th, 2015, at the home of her daughter, Shirley “Cookie” Applegate in Sellersburg.
Mary entered this life on May 9th, 1921 in Williamsburg, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Sidney Barnes and Mary Jane (Rains) Davis.
She was united in marriage on September 1st, 1936, in Harlan County, Kentucky to Charles V. Davenport. This happy union was blessed with two sons: Curt and Bob, and two daughters: Shirley and Betty to bless their home. Mary and Charles shared 57 loving years of marriage together until Charles passed away on June 19th, 1993.
Mary and Charles resided in the Vevay community for 50 years. Mary was a long standing member of the Markland Baptist Church, where she was very active until her health began to fail. Mary and Charles wintered in Homestead, Florida where she was employed as an upholsterer for a company for several years until Hurricane Andrew hit in August 1992.
She was a wonderful homemaker and could make out of this world dumplings, green beans, fried chicken and gravy. Mary enjoyed upholstering and fabricating handmade dolls for her family.
Mary will be dearly missed by her son: Curt Davenport and his wife: Debbie of Spartanburg, South Carolina; her daughters: Shirley “Cookie” Applegate of Sellersburg, Indiana and Betty Young Monroe and her husband: Frank of New Albany, Indiana; and her numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Sidney Barnes and Mary Jane (Rains) Davis; her husband: Charles V. Davenport, who died on June 19th, 1993; by her son: Bob Davenport; her great-grandson: Jared Samples; and her sons-in-law: Stan Applegate and Monte Young.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, January 2nd, 2016, at 3 p.m., by Pastor Bobby Brundidge, Jr., at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043. Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery.

Patsy Turner
Patsy J. (Curry) Turner, 82, of Patriot, passed away on Saturday, December 26th, 2015 at the home of her daughter in Rising Sun.
Patsy was born in Switzerland County, on July 4th, 1933, the daughter of the late Ora (Jividen) and Orlando Curry. She attended Cass-Union School.
On October 6th, 1949 she married David L. Turner, who passed away on December 20th, 2008. Patsy and David were married 59 years.
Patsy retired from U.S. Shoe in Vevay; and after retiring from U.S. Shoe, Patsy worked for J&J Packaging and Gibson Greeting Cards. Patsy was a former member of the Hoosier Modulators CB club and a member of the Grant’s Creek Baptist Church.
Patsy is survived by two daughters: Joyce Blackson, of Patriot and Cheryl Abplanalp (Mark), of Rising Sun; by a son: Leroy Turner (Donna), of Harrison, Ohio; by grandchildren: Tracy Parker, Shawn Goff, Melissa Goff, David Sandlin, Joshua Sandlin, Charles Turner and Brittany Turner; by 11 great-grandchildren and by six great- great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother: Donald Curry (Rose Marie), of Rising Sun; and by a sister-in-law: Virginia Curry of Dillsboro, Indiana.
Patsy was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, David; by a son, David Wayne Turner; by stepdaughter, Rosemary Faye Goff; by a brother, Gerald Curry; by a sister, Wilma Jean Curry; and by half sisters: Norma Reed and Etheleen Brett.
Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, December 29th at the Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, with Pastor Eric Moore officiating. Friends were invited to call on Tuesday prior to the time of service at the funeral home. Burial was at Eastview Cemetery in Patriot.

John Lucas
John Ervin Lucas, age 92, of near Moorefield, passed away at 2:55 p.m. on Thursday, December 24th, 2015, at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.
John entered this life on March 4th, 1923, in Owen County, Kentucky, the loving son of the late Charlie G. and America Lee (Lewis) Lucas. He was raised near Moorefield, where he attended school and had resided in the community since the age of six.
John was inducted into the United States Army on November 5th, 1945, at Fort Ord, California, serving during World War II. He earned the Army of Occupation Medal Germany and Victory Medal. John was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on November 23rd, 1946 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.
John was united in marriage on September 14th, 1958, at the Long Run Baptist Parsonage in Moorefield to Dorothy Louise Andrew, and to this union arrived four children to bless their home. John and Dorothy shared 10 years of marriage together until her death.
John farmed all of his life near Moorefield, where he operated a dairy and raised tobacco, hogs, sheep and hay. Throughout the years they often had a lamb in the house that they had to bottle feed.
John was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185. John will be remembered for his love of coon hunting, fox hunting, especially his dog, Ruby, who was his faithful companion.
John will be dearly missed by his daughter: Barbara Jean Lucas of near Moorefield; his sons: James William Lucas and his wife: Sharon of Rising Sun and John Robert “Bob” Lucas and his wife: Debi of near Moorefield; by his grandchildren: Andy Lucas and his wife: Shelby; Willie Self and his wife: Kelsey; Randa Combs and her husband: Josh; Tiffany Lucas, Chris Flood and his wife: Brooke; Stephanie Buchanan and her husband: Josh; Travis Jellison and his wife: Kelli; and Ashley Jellison and his friend: Brandy Hall.
He will also be missed by his great-grandchildren: Mason, Ellie, Ava, Hadley, Adeleigh, Kinsley, Shelby, Trinity, Trenton, Jayden and Danielle; by his sister: Faye Olds of Vevay; by his brother: Willie Lucas and his wife: Ellen of Madison; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Nell and Emmett Jaynes of Anderson, Indiana; Betty Lucas of Madison; Mary Lucas of Moorefield; Becky Lucas of Grapevine, Texas; and Bud Lawler of Ft. Worth, Texas; and his numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Charlie G. Lucas, who died on December 25th, 1939; and America Lee (Lewis) Lucas, who died on September 4th, 1987; his wife: Dorothy Louise (Andrew) Lucas, who died on November 17th, 1968; his daughter: Ruth Ann Lucas, who died on April 19th, 1961; his daughter-in-law: Nancy Lucas, who died on May 19th, 2009; his sisters: Pauline Lucas, who died on April 12th, 1982; Frances Jones, who died on September 25th, 1988; Ann Lucas, who died on December 16th, 1987 and Carolyn Lawler; his brothers: Charles Lucas, who died on November 4th, 1994; George Lucas, who died on March 29th, 2001; Albert Lucas, who died on November 10th, 1993; Walker D. Lucas, who died on February 23rd, 2002; Raymond Lucas and Bruce Lucas.

Carroll Scudder
Carroll Norman Scudder, age 96, of Fairview, passed away at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 28th, 2015, at the Swiss Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Vevay.
Carroll entered this life on August 18th, 1919, on Bethel Ridge in Florence, the son of the late Edwin and Olive (Slack) Scudder. He was a 1937 graduate of Patriot High School.
He was united in marriage on December 24th, 1940, by Reverend Tom Jennings at the Fairview United Methodist Parsonage to Mavis Irene Cole. This happy union was blessed with one son, Larry Dean Scudder, who passed away on May 28th, 2012. Carroll and Mavis shared nearly 72 loving years of marriage together until Mavis passed away on August 19th, 2012.
Carroll was inducted into the United States Army on May 3rd, 1944 at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana, serving during World War II. He trained at the Fort McClellan, Alabama then he was sent to Wisconsin where he left for active duty. He served in heavy weapons company “D” with a nine-millimeter mortar, 385th Regiment, 76th Division, 3rd Army under General George Patton.
He fought in the battles of Ardennes, Rhineland, and in Central Europe. Carroll fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and helped free a prisoner of war camp at Konigstern, and the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald. He earned the EAME Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars; The Combat Infantry Badge; and the World War II Victory Badge. Carroll was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class on October 22nd, 1945 at Camp Butner, North Carolina.
Carroll took over his father’s farm on Bethel Ridge, then later moved to the Fairview community where he ran a large dairy farm for J. Tandy. He drove a school bus for 30 years for the Switzerland County School Corporation while still farming. In 1953 he and his wife purchased the Dilver Moreillon Farm near Fairview, where he farmed and continued driving a school bus.
After their marriage, Carroll worked for Clorin Phillips hauling coal from the coal mines back in Kentucky. Later he moved to Vevay where he and his wife took over Bruners Store and Hatchery. He went to Ivy Tech Community College in Cincinnati, Ohio while his wife operated the store. After he graduated he worked as a welder for Michael’s Arts and Bronze in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He served as Cotton Township Trustee for four years. He served on the ASCS Board and Office for Switzerland County. He was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church serving on the administration board and many others. He was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396.
Carroll resided all of his life in the Switzerland County community and will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends.
Carroll will be dearly missed by his loving granddaughters: Melanie Ann Scudder and Jennifer (Scudder) Wesley of Fairview; his great-grandson: Michael Dean Wesley of Fairview; his nieces who cared for him: Tanya Curry of East Enterprise and Debbie Kappes of Fairview, and other numerous nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his sister: Bonnie Niles and her husband: Ralph of Erlanger, Kentucky; his brothers: Leland Scudder and his wife: Faye of Dillsboro, Indiana and John Scudder of Quail Valley, California; his sisters-in-law: Marcella Cole and Wilma Cole, both of Fairview; and his brother-in-law: Alvin Cole of Fairview.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Edwin and Olive (Slack) Scudder; his loving wife, Mavis Irene (Cole) Scudder, who passed away on August 19th, 2012; his son: Larry Dean Scudder, who died on May 28th, 2012; his brothers and sisters-in-law: Reynold “Renny” and Marla Scudder, Earl Edwin and Nora Scudder; and his sister and brother-in-law: Elizabeth and Harry Cheek.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 2nd, 2016, at 11 a.m., by Brother Hobert Byrd, at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043.
Interment and full military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185, the Vevay VFW Post #5396 and the Fort Knox Ceremonial Unit in the Vevay Cemetery.

Ella May Edwards
Ella May (Tapp) Edwards, age 68, of Vevay, passed away with her loving family by her side at 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 24th, 2015, at her residence.
Ella May entered this life on February 4th, 1947, in Vevay, the loving daughter of the late Walter and Mary Etta (Earls) Tapp. She was raised in Vevay and was a graduate of the Vevay High School.
Ella May was united in marriage on November 10th, 1984 in Vevay, to Jesse Dale Edwards. Ella May and Jesse Dale shared over 31 years of marriage together until her death.
Ella May was a former employee for the U.S. Shoe Factory in Vevay, for several years. She was also employed for Richardson’s Industries in Vevay, for 10 years. Ella May retired from Royer Corporation in Madison after nine years of service.
She was a member of the Vevay American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #185. Ella May enjoyed gambling and will be missed by her loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Walter and Mary Etta (Earls) Tapp; by her son: Walter Burke, who died in 1998; her grandson: Brandon Michael Burke-Pike, who died on August 18th, 2014; by her brother: Harry Tapp; and her sister-in-law: Beulah Tapp.
