Omer Brown

  Omer Wayne Brown, 68, of Aurora, Indiana (formerly of Rising Sun), passed away at 9:20 a.m. on Monday, May 6th, 2019, at the Drake Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

  Omer was born in Covington, Kentucky on August 18th, 1950, the son of the late Margie (Noell) and Clive O. Brown. He was a graduate of Rising Sun High School, Class of 1968 and attended Thomas Moore College for two years.

  Omer proudly served his country in the U.S. Army  during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of SP4. While in service, Omer earned the National Defense Service Medal, Sharp Shooter Medal and Marksmanship Medal.

  Omer married Mary (Mays) Brown on July 9th, 1979 in Gatlinburg, TN. Omer and Mary were together nearly 40 years until his passing.

  Omer was a member of the Rising Sun American Legion Post #59 where he served as past commander, color guard member and bar manager.

  He was employed as an expeditor in bottling at Seagrams Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana for 22 years, retiring in 2007.

  Omer was very involved in his community and served as Mayor of Rising Sun from January 1984 until December of 1987. He was also a  former Rising Sun Volunteer Fire Department member and a former Lions Club member. Omer also coached youth baseball. He loved spending time with his grandchildren Lynley and his fishing buddy Bodie.

  Omer is  survived by his wife, Mary Brown, of Aurora, Indiana; by his son, Jeremy Brown and wife Pamela of  Rising Sun; by his grandchildren: Bodie and Lynley; by his sister, Vickie Watkins, of Warsaw, Kentucky; and by his brother, Gary Brown, of Kentucky.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a daughter, Shawna Bernice Brown.

  Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 11th at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, with Pastor Corey Potts officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday, May 11th, from 2 p.m. until the beginning of the service at the funeral home. 

  Memorial donations may be made to American Legion Post 59 Color Guard or Rising Sun SAY Soccer. Cards are available at the funeral home.

Marietta Lester

  Marietta Mae (Bennett) Lester, age 88, of Hanover, Indiana, formerly of Switzerland County, passed away at 9:40 a.m. on Saturday, May 4th, 2019, at the Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover.

  Marietta entered this life on July 22nd, 1930, in Switzerland County, the loving daughter of the late Clarence W. and Hazel Marie (Froman) Bennett. She was raised in Switzerland County, where she attended the Florence School.

  Marietta was united in marriage on April 24th, 1948, in Vevay, to the late Edwin Leon Lester. This happy union was blessed with three sons: Charles, Denver and Roger. Marietta and Edwin shared 46 years of marriage together until he passed away on May 9th, 1994.

  In 1966, Marietta was employed on the assembly line for Randall’s Textron in Vevay, retiring in 1991, after 25 years of service. She was a member of the East Enterprise United Methodist Church in East Enterprise. Marietta resided all of her life in the Switzerland County community, until 2013 when she moved to the Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover, Indiana.

  Marietta enjoyed working word search puzzles, cooking, spending time with her grandchildren and collecting Pillsbury Dough Boys.

  Marietta will be missed by her sons: Charles L. Lester and his wife Janet of Greendale, Indiana; Denver L. Lester and his wife Anna of Dawson, Georgia; and Roger D. Lester and his wife Debra of Madison; by her grandchildren: Shawn, Christina, Christopher Dale, Dallas and Kenneth; by her great-grandchildren: Sabrina, Autumn, Noah, Hunter, Alex, Austin and Adeline; by her brother, Gary L. Bennett of Bennington; and her several nieces and nephews.

  She was preceded in death by her parents: Clarence W. Bennett, who died on January 28th, 1981 and Hazel Marie (Froman) Bennett, who died on May 11th, 1931; by her husband, Edwin Leon Lester, who died on May 9th, 1994; by her step-mother, Lena G. (Wells) Bennett, who died on June 10th, 2005; by her brothers: Gerald Bennett, Stanley H. Bennett, who died on October 24th, 2000, William Copeland “Bill” Bennett, Sr. who died on April 25th, 2008, and Dealton “Dee” Froman Bennett, who died on June 21st, 2015.

  Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, May 8th, by Reverend Bobby O’Banion at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043. Interment followed in the Vevay Cemetery. Friends were invited to call on the family on Wednesday, May 8th, prior to the start of the service at the funeral home.

Vera McSwain

  Vera Marie (Schroeder) McSwain, age 88, of Indianapolis, Indiana, formerly of Switzerland County, passed away at 2:31 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1st, 2019, at Aspen Trace in Greenwood, Indiana.

  Vera entered this life on March 5th, 1931, in Patriot, the loving daughter of the late Cliva E. and Clara M. (Uhlmansiek) Schroeder. She was raised in Switzerland County where she was a 1949 graduate of Patriot High School.

  Vera was united in marriage on July 24th, 1954 at the Concord Community Church in Patriot, to the late Russell David McSwain. This happy union was blessed with two sons: Kevin and Brian. Russell and Vera shared 61 loving years of marriage together until Russell passed away on August 16th, 2015.

  In 1991, Vera was employed as the county extension director for the Switzerland County ASCS Office in Vevay, retiring in 1998, after 30 years of service. Russell and Vera resided all of their lives in the Switzerland County community until moving in 2008 to the Indianapolis community to be near their son and grandchildren. She was a wonderful homemaker, devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and dear friend.

 Vera’s greatest hobby was her family. Their joy was her joy. She enjoyed watching college basketball and the Cincinnati Reds. Vera was especially involved in tractor pulling with Russell, Kevin and Brian; and later with her grandchildren. Vera always looked forward to her ASCS retirement luncheons.

  Vera will be deeply missed by her son, Brian McSwain and his wife Susie of Indianapolis, Indiana; by her grandchildren: Heather Dornbusch and her husband, Ben; Benjamin D. McSwain; Brianna M. McSwain; and Jenna M. McSwain — all of Indianapolis, Indiana; by her great-granddaughters, Clara and Abigail Dornbusch of Indianapolis, Indiana; by her sisters-in-law, Marguerite Schroeder of Bedford, Indiana, Mary Lou Hart of Madison and  Charlene McSwain of Decatur, Indiana; and her several nieces and nephews.

  She was preceded in death by her parents, Cliva E. and Clara M. (Uhlmansiek) Schroeder; by her husband, Russell David McSwain, who died on August 16th, 2015; by her son, Kevin W. McSwain, who died on March 12th, 1989; by her brother, Harold C. Schroeder, who died on July 6th, 2002; by her sister, Irene Smith, who died on April 16th, 1998; by her brother-in-law, Harold Fels, who died on December 25th, 2009; by her sister-in-law, Wilma Jean Fels, who died on March 31st, 2017; and by her brother-in-law, James W McSwain, who died on January 20th, 2018.

  Funeral services were conducted on Monday, May 6th, by Pastor KC Banta at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043. Interment followed in the Vevay Cemetery.

  Friends were invited to call on the family on Sunday, May 5th, at the funeral home.

Mareta Rose

  Mareta Aldean (Pickett) Rose, age 99, of Vevay, passed away at 2:20 p.m. on Friday, May 3rd, 2019, at her residence.

  Mareta entered this life on August 10th, 1919, in Switzerland County, the loving daughter of the late Clovis and Tempest (Sanders) Rose. She was raised in Switzerland County, where she was a 1937 graduate of Patriot High School.

  Mareta was united in marriage on April 8th, 1941 to Sammy Gurley Rose. This happy union was blessed with two sons, Larry and Terry. Mareta and Sammy shared 46 years of marriage together until Sammy passed away on March 7th, 1987.

  Mareta was wonderful homemaker and cook and helped her husband on the family farm. She resided all of her life in Switzerland County and was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church.

  Mareta will be missed by her sons, Larry Gene Rose of Vevay and Terry Wayne Rose and his wife Evelyn of Vevay; by her grandchildren: Anthony “Tony” Rose and his wife, Shonda; Michael Rose, and Travis Rose; by her great-grandchildren: Kristen Rose and her companion, Quentin Wright; Chelsea Duvall and her fiancé, Klint Kirkpatrick; and Wyatt Rose; and by her great-great-grandchildren: Brinley Sierrah Wright and Blayke Lauren Wright.

  She was preceded in death by her parents, Clovis and Tempest (Sanders) Pickett; by her husband, Sammy Gurley Rose, who died on March 7th, 1987; by her great-granddaughter, Lauren Marie Rose, who died on September 26th, 2018; and by her sister, Falba Ray, who died on June 16th, 1948.

  Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, May 7th, by Brother Hobert Byrd at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043. Interment followed in the Vevay Cemetery.

  Friends were invited to call on the family on Tuesday, May 7th, prior to the beginning of the services at the funeral home.
