New scholarship honors Denny Brown and Jim Stultz

The Community Foundation of Switzerland County, Inc. is pleased to announce that a scholarship was recently established in memory of Denny Brown and Jim Stultz.

The Denny Brown/Jim Stultz Vevay Warrior Scholarship Fund will award scholarships to residents of Switzerland County planning on attending a two-year college or technical/vocational school.

Dennis Jay Brown and James Allen Stultz were both 1965 graduates of Vevay High School. Both were great athletes and well-respected citizens; and both proudly served our country in the United States Marine Corps.

Denny Brown was raised in Switzerland County. He was inducted into the United States Marine Corps in August of 1965, rising to the rank of Lance Corporal. He was honorably discharged in May of 1967 after being wounded in the battle of “Operation Oregon” in Phu Bai Vietnam in March of 1966.

For his courageous service to his country, Denny received the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and many other honors.

He then went on to become an Industrial Arts teacher at Switzerland County High School for 27 years, where he also coached basketball, baseball, cross country and track.

Denny passed away in July of 2013 at the age of 66.

Jim Stultz, whom many called “Bobe”, was inducted into the United States Marine Corps shortly after graduating from high school in 1965. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and served during the Vietnam War. He earned the Good Conduct medal, Presidential Unit citation, Sharpshooter Badge Rifle M-14 and many other honors before he was honorably discharged in 1969.

Jim returned to Vevay and was employed with the U.S. Shoe Corporation, where he was a supervisor for many years. He was later employed as a maintenance welder for Cincinnati Gas and Electric. Jim was also a hunter, trapper and fisherman.

Jim passed away at the age of 61 in December of 2007.

Once they returned to their hometown of Vevay after their service in the United States Marine Corps, both Denny and Jim remained very patriotic throughout their lives. They both were members of the Vevay American Legion Post 185 and the Vevay VFW Post 5396 and they continued to serve their country and community in many positive ways.

The first Denny Brown/Jim Stultz Vevay Warrior Scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2017.

The criteria include:

• Must be a resident of Switzerland County, Indiana

• GPA of 2.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.

• Preference will be given to individuals that are awarded few or no other scholarships.
