Montgomery’s 20 and 17 not enough against ‘plugs

The Rising Sun Lady Shiners returned to action on Thursday, Dec. 27th as part of a four team tournament at Speedway High School.

  Sophomore Lindsay Montgomery put together a career best 20 points and 17 rebounds but the host Sparkplugs were charged up for the 9:30 a.m. opener and cruised to a 60-42 win.

  Montgomery opened the scoring with a three point play but Speedway rattled off eight unanswered points to force coach Abby Friend to call time out less than two minutes into the game.

   Speedway took a 17-9 lead after one quarter and built a 39-23 lead at the half.

   The Sparkplugs were clicking on all cylinders as they pushed the lead to 53-28 after three quarters.

   Montgomery dominaated the boards in the second half with 13 of her 17 rebounds, scoring 10 of 21 points off the offensive glass.

   Senior Danyka Groover added eight points and three rebounds after picking up two early first half fouls. Sophomore Maddi Wilson added six points and five boards  with Sydney Bostic adding a 3-pointer along with a basket each by Sydney Pitts and Kinsey Price.

  Bostic added five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

  Speedway was led by sophomore maddie Barnes with 13 including one of her team’s five 3-pointers. Senior Hannah Lindsey added 12 points including a pair of 3-pointers. Classmate Rachael Gregory  had eight points with two 3-pointer. Freshman Camiell Perry added seven, Maggie Endres six, Karly Smith five and Gianni Dal Corobbo four.

   The Shiners were 15-for-43 and 7-for-10 at the line and had 23 turnovers to just six by their hosts.

  Speedway connected on 22-41 including 6-for-14 from behind the arc but just 10-for-22 from the line.

  Rising Sun had a 33-24 rebounding advantage.
