The Switzerland County School Board is expected to name Mike Jones as the new principal of Switzerland County Elementary School at its monthly meeting this Monday, July 23rd.
“The county elementary school is somewhere that I have feelings for because I went to elementary school at Patriot and I have roots out in the county, I’m from out in the county,” Mike Jones said. “I’m very excited about this opportunity.”
A veteran of 28 years of teaching in the Switzerland County School Corporation, Mike Jones’ experience has been in 7th-12th grades, but he has filled in for elementary principals as they have needed to be gone, and those experiences pointed him toward elementary schools.
“I applied for the high school principal’s job before, but I thought several years ago that my focus was going to be on elementary education,” Mike Jones said. “I’ve been working slowly but steadily on getting a superintendent’s license, but I’ve been focusing my administrative classes on elementary education.”
Calling the principal’s job at Switzerland County Elementary School, “The opportunity I’ve been waiting for,” Mike Jones says that he is looking forward to the opportunity to work with children at a younger age.
“You get to have more influence on them and you can have more success helping them prepare for middle school and high school,” he said. “I’m also excited about getting the chance to interact much more with the parents.”
