The Switzerland County Middle School wrestling team completed a historic regular season match on Saturday when it traveled to Madison to compete in the ‘Bear Rumble’.
The team finished seventh out of eight teams in the match, quite a feat considering half of Coach Mark Jackson’s roster is made up of first year wrestlers.
“We also only had six wrestlers competing, while most of the other schools had 10 to 20 kids competing,” Coach Jackson said.
Results from the Bear Rumble were: Champion at 130-pounds, Tyler Lyons; second place at 165-pounds, Dakota Baatz; and fourth place was earned by Collin Bovard.
Other Switzerland County wrestlers who competed included: Damien Day, Luke Storey and Sammy Richards.
On the season, the team finished with an overall record of 4-3, a new school record.
Two regular season also saw two Pacer undefeated wrestlers: Tyler Lyons (13-0) and Dustin Wallace (8-0).
“This is the most determined group of kids I have ever coached and will miss them more than they could ever realize,” Coach Jackson said. “All but two of my grapplers will be moving on to the high school next year.”
The team will be traveling to Milan this Saturday to compete in the SIWC Conference tournament. This will be its last wrestling meet this season.
