Middle school cross country teams earn ORVC titles

Both the boys and girls cross country teams from Switzerland County Middle School earned the championships of the Ohio River Valley Conference on Monday night in Hanover – completing two of the most successful seasons on record.

Switzerland County claimed the two individual championships as well; with Braden Burk winning the boys individual title; and Robin Furnish winning the girls individual championship.

Both teams are coached by Larry Gault.

In the girls race, Switzerland County won the title with a team score of 32; outdistancing South Ripley, who finished with 56; Rising Sun, who scored 69; and Jac-Cen-Del, who finished with 78.

Robin Furnish won the race with a time of 13:01; with Mercedes Parham finishing sixth overall in a time of 13:56; and Bri Meli was seventh overall in a time of 13:58. Courtney Pedraza finished 11th overall in a time of 14:09.

All four runners earned All Conference laurels by finishing in the top 12 of the race.

Other Lady Pacer runners included: Cameron Ray, 13th overall in a time of 14:45; Lauren Haskell, 14th overall in a time of 14:52; and Adeli Kinne, 19th overall in a time of 15:20.

In the boys race, the Pacers finished with a team score of 30; easily outdistancing second place Jac-Cen-Del (64). South Ripley (69) was third; followed by Rising Sun (93); Milan (121); and Southwestern (130).

Braden Burk capped an outstanding middle school career by winning the race in a time of 11:03; while teammate Sean Oatman was third overall in 11:30; Talen Taylor was fifth overall in a time of 12:00; and Doug Ray was eighth overall in a time of 12:15.

All five earned All Conference honors by finishing in the top 12.

Other Switzerland County runners included: Ryan Sullivan in 13th place in a time of 12:44; Dakota Taylor in 15th place in a time of 12:49; and Riley Phagan in 43rd place in a time of 18:45.
