Switzerland County High School holds winter sports banquet to honor athletes

Switzerland County athletes who participated in winter sports were honored on Tuesday night at the annual athletic banquet. Switzerland County High School officially wrapped up its winter sports season on Tuesday night as it honored athletes who participated on teams throughout the winter months.

Athletes honored included members of the cheerleading, wrestling, girls and boys swimming, and girls and boys basketball.

Also honored were winter sports athletes who excelled in the classroom, with each earning a scholastic award.

Honors included:

- In Cheerleading: the Varsity Leadership Award was earned by Cayli Chase; the Varsity Spirit Award was earned by Bradley Cox; the Varsity Most Improved was earned by Nora Yazell; the Junior Varsity Spirit Award was earned by Kylie Carfield; and the Junior Varsity Most Improved was earned by Ariana Bright.

- In Wrestling: the Best Attitude Award was earned by Alleyshia Jones; the Push Up Award was earned by Alex Herbert; the 'Mr. Pacer' Award was earned by Tylor Thomas; and the Most Improved Award was earned by Cody Wilson.

- For Girls Swimming: McKenna Edwards was honored for setting the school record in the backstroke.

The Mental Attitude Award was earned by Jacqueline Hensley; the Sprint Award was earned by Megan Chitwood; the Distance Award was earned by Shelby Cole; the Specialty Stroke Award was earned by McKenna Edwards; and special "Pacer For Life" Awards were earned by Lisa Alves, Lisa Leoni, Bea Navarro Gortazar, Anja Rotter and Clovis Wang.

- In Boys Swimming: Colton Penick was honored for setting new school records in the 200-yard freestyle and also the backstroke. The 200-yard relay team of Demetrie Liapis, Colton Penick, Nick Braun, and Dakota Taylor was also honored for setting a new school record.

The Freestyle Award was earned by Talen Taylor; the Mental Attitude Award was earned by Nick Braun; the Specialty Stroke Award was earned by Colton Penick; the Most Improved Award was earned by Gabe Streett; and "Pacer for Life" Awards were earned by Demetrie Liapis and Ricardo Cidral.

- For Girls Basketball: the Defense Award for the Junior Varsity team was earned by Taylar Jordan; and the Most Improved Award for the Junior Varsity team was earned by Mallory Phagan.

For the Varsity team: the Most Improved Award was earned by Bre Ricketts; the Field Goal Award was earned by Eve Galbreath; the Rebound Award was earned by Eve Galbreath; the Defense Award was earned by Kelsi Konkle; and the Freethrow Award was also earned by Kelsi Konkle.

Also: the Most Improved Award was earned by Makenzie Mathews; the Assist Award was earned by Brooke Todd; the Defense Award was earned by Brooke Todd; the Steals Award was earned by Brooke Todd; and the Freethrow Award was earned by Brooke Todd.

- In Boys Basketball:

The Freshman 'C' Team Mental Attitude was earned by Brody Splain.

For the Junior Varsity team: the Freethrow Award was earned by Dakota Fuller; the Defense Award was earned by Zach Whitaker; and the Most Improved Award was earned by Caleb Furnish.

At the Varsity level: the Rebound Award was earned by Austin Clark; and the Field Goal Award was earned by Austin Clark.

He was also honored for entering the '1,000-point' Club, only the fourth player in Pacer boys basketball history to achieve the milestone.

Also: the Three-point Shooting Percentage Award was earned by Chase Ritch; the Freethrow Award was earned by Chase Ritch; the Deflection Award was earned by T.J. White; the Steals Award was earned by T.J. White; the Assist Award was earned by Ben Curran; the Defense Award was earned by Ben Curran; and the 'Lunch Box' Award was earned by Riley Phagan.

At the end of the evening, Scholastic Awards were presented to winter sport athletes who maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Those honored included:

Freshmen: Nick Braun, Taylar Jordan, Colton Penick, Mallory Phagan, Brody Splain, and Gabe Streett.

Sophomores: Bre Braun, Kylie Carfield, Megan Chitwood, Shelby Cole, James Crabtree, McKenna Edwards, Kelsi Konkle, Makenzie Mathews, Brooke Todd, and Zach Whitaker.

Juniors: Ricardo Cidral, Allessandro Famulari, Jacqueline Hensley, Adeli Kinne, Riley Phagan, and Anja Rotter.

Seniors: Erika Coy, Shelby Prince, and Bre Ricketts.
