For the fifth straight year, students at Switzerland County Elementary School have worked to help the hungry and less fortunate in other parts of the world.
Coordinated by teacher Gina Miles, second grade students spent a part of last Friday packaging and boxing food containers that will be sent to people in South Sudan and also to Haiti.
“We are also sending food to Haiti because many of our former students expressed concern over the hurricane that devastated the area,” Miles said. “Having learned about Haiti a couple of years ago, they felt a vested interest in their well being.”
The program, “Love the Hungry”, came to Switzerland County Elementary School for the fifth straight year, and Miles said that on Friday students packed a total of 10.056 meals; which brought the five year grand total to over 50,000 meals packed by students here, and in that time students have also raised $12,500 to assist with expense of the program.
In addition to students, teachers, parents, and members of the community also came to help with this worthwhile project.
