Lineup change keys fourth straight boys’ ORVC title

Rising Sun boys track team has dealt with its share of injuries this season but got a complete team effort (including support from the girls team) as they captured the school’s fourth straight Ohio River Valley Conference title Thursday, May 12th at South Dearborn.

After four hours of off and on rain, the meet came down to the final 4×400 relay. Switzerland County was in need of a first place finish and Rising Sun needed to be fourth to give the Pacers a sweep of the ORVC title (the girls nearly doubled up Milan 132-77 in their portion of the meet). Southwestern won the final relay followed by Switzerland County (Nolan Armstrong, Bailey Bennett, Cameron Niswander, Logan Parton) in 3:46 and Rising Sun in third (Colton Henry, Andrew Koons, Zach Martini and Claudio Gallegos) in 3:51.2.

The result had Rising Sun first with 126 followed by Switzerland County with 122, Southwestern 87, Milan 48, South Ripley 44.5, Shawe 35 and Jac-Cen-Del 2.5.

“Claudio stepped up like a senior to run the relay (after running the 800) and Zach (Martini) stepped in (after winning the 3200) and Koons closed the door,” Rising Sun Coach Jason Barth complimented his final team effort.

Barth explained he had spent six hours trying to find the right combination to get maximum results.

One big change was adding Andrew Koons to the shot put. The sophomore high jumper placed second (39’7″) to teammate Derrick Eldridge (43’7.5″), Switzerland County’s Brad Rickett was third (37’11.5″).

Eldridge added a first in the discus (135′) but the Pacers outscored RS with second and third place finish by Cameron Shaw (110’4″) and Brad Rickett (104’7″).

Koons won the high jump (5-9″) with Hunter Hayes third for the Pacers (5’4″).

Hayes edged out teammate Logan Parton in the long jump 18’9″ and 18’6″ respectively. In a meet where every point counts, Rising Sun’s Derak Woystek placed sixth in the long jump (17’7.25″).

The Pacers dominated the sprint events with Keegan Morris and Brody Splain going 1-2 in the 100 (11.6, 11.9) and Morris winning the 200 (24.10) and Splain third (24.3). Will Pike was second in th 400 (53.7) with Rising Sun’s Claudio Gallegos fourth (55.5).

Gallegos won the 800 (2:08.5) with teammate Trevor Levi setting a PR (2:12.4) in second. Jordon Lay was fourth for the Pacers.

Junior Zach Martini won the 1600 (4:45.2) and 3200 (10:27.5) with Levi picking up seconds in each event (4:55.2 and 11:04.1). Cameron Papucci picked up a fifth place for SC in the 3200 (11:23.6).

Junior Colton Henry came up hobbling in the 4×800 but not before he started the Shiners on their way to first place. Levi, Martini and Gallegos took the event (8:43.7) with the Pacer team of Tyler Manbeck, Hunter Peterson, Alex Powers and Shawn Robinson sixth (11:14.9).

Switzerland County’s 4×100 relay team of Nolan Armstrong, Hunter Hayes, Keegan Morris and Cameron Niswander won (45.8) with Rising Sun managing a third place finish (49.6) with the team of Mike Veechiola, Derak Woystek, Colton Henry and Andrew Koons.

SC sophomore Bailey Bennett won the high hurdles (17.7) with Rising Sun’s Jake Scott fourth (18.3). Scott was fifth in the 300 hurdles (47.5). Derak Woystek picked up another big point as he won the slow heat. His time of 48.1 placed him in sixth.

Southwestern’s Josiah Lawson won the 400 (52.9) and led the Rebels’ 4×400 relay team to victory (3:43.1).

The remaining ORVC event winner was Shawe’s Skip Maas in the 300 hurdles (44.6).
