New court

The local bar association would like to inform the citizens of the county of the efforts we have made and are making to have the legislature create a Circuit Court for Switzerland County. Presently the county primarily uses the Superior Court, which is a part-time court, but statistics show that a full-time court is needed. We feel that Switzerland County deserves to have its own court system like every other county in the state, rather than the shared system that presently exists.
The County Commissioners and the County Council have heard from the attorneys regarding the costs and have given their support to the creation of such a court. This new court would not result in any additional cost to taxpayers. It would result in giving the people of Switzerland County the same access to the courts that is enjoyed by Hoosiers in other Indiana counties.
Judge Todd, of the Jefferson/Switzerland Circuit Court, supports separating Switzerland County from Jefferson County, and even attended a meeting of the Commission on Courts last fall to voice his opinion and support. Chad Lewis, the new prosecuting attorney, also attended a Commission meeting and supports the new court.
Senator James Lewis has been extremely helpful and has drafted Senate Bill 255, which would create the new Switzerland Circuit court. Creating a new circuit court here will affect Ohio County; representatives of Ohio County attended the Commission meetings and were supportive of a new court here as long as they would remain affiliated with Dearborn County.
