Leah Anders earns ORVC championship

The Switzerland County girls and boys cross country teams traveled to Hanover for the ORVC meet this past Saturday, and Leah Anders led the Lady Pacers by earning the individual championship in the race.

Anders’ effort help lead the Lady Pacers to a second place overall finish; which came down to a tie breaker between Milan and Switzerland County – with Milan coming on top.

Anders, a sophomore, recorded a course-best time of 20:29 to earn the individual title; and she was joined on the All Conference team by senior Cameron Ray, who earned fifth place overall with a time of 22:02.

Zoe Cole was 13th overall in a personal best time of 24:11 – just one place away from making the All Conference team. Rounding out the scoring was freshman Josie Meyer, who finished 19th overall in a time of 25:11; Maggie Clayton in 27th place overall in a time of 26:21; Allison Detmer in 30th place overall in a time of 27:40; and Alina Frauendorf in 37th place overall in a time of 31:19.

“The ladies had a heartbreaking defeat,” head coach Kris Sandlin said. “We were without a few runners which hurt us but we had other ladies step up to fill the void. The girls will take this feeling of defeat and use it to fuel the rest of their season.”

The Pacer boys team finished seventh overall. Leading the way for the boys was Cameron Papucci, who finished 19th overall in a season best time of 19:50; while Landon Wilks was 25th overall in a time of 20:38.

Patrick Stow finished 26th overall in a time of 20:45; Garrett Demaree was 38th overall in a time of 22:29; and Nathan Scudder finished 42nd in a time of 24:07.

“The boys have a young team and was also without one of their top runners,” Coach Sandlin said. “We had Garrett running through an injury to help the guys achieve a full team score. That was not the result we wanted but there are many positives we can build upon which includes achieving a team score which is better than last year.”

Both teams now head into Sectional action this Saturday, October 8th, also on the Hanover College course. The girls meet will begin at 10:30 a.m.
