The Rising Sun Lady Shiners held off a second half challenge from Trinity Lutheran to claim a 4-3 victory in the Class A Sectional 45 tournament opener Monday, Oct. 3rd at Rising Sun.
Sophomore Keira Oser led the way with a three goal hat trick.
She scored at the 24:56 mark of the first half then again with 5:47 left when the ball slipped through the Trinity keeper.
The visiting Cougars (home team on the scoreboard) got new life on a high looping shot from Maddie Bell with 36:20 left in the game. However, Oser scored her third goal just one minute later.
Lily Williams drilled a 30 yard shot high into the net to make it 3-2 with 20:51 left. Trinity came close to tying the score but Shiner defender Chelsea Brown cleared the ball from off the goal line.
Instead, it was Brown that set up the Shiners final and winning goal. She came up past the midfield circle and booted a 40 yard shot on goal that freshman Kinsey Price tapped in for a 4-2 advantage with 15:30 remaining.
Neither goalie could handle the long shot attempts. Kirstin Hoene scored the final goal on a 35 yard direct kick. Rising Sun freshman Sydney Pitts had a long looping shot that sailed just high.
Trinity was on the attack at the end but time ran out when they set the ball for a corner kick instead of a throw in as time expired.
Shiner keeper Riley Chipman had six saves while Trinity’s Hailley Peters collected eight.
The win sets up a rematch with conference foe Milan today (Thursday) at 5 p.m.
