Lady Shiners will tough three set contest with Lady Pacers

The Rising Sun Lady Shiners bounced back from a season opening loss to Trinity Lutheran to post a 3-0 sweep of Ohio River Valley Conference foe Switzerland County on Thursday, Aug. 20.

Coach Lindsey Merica’s troops fought off the visiting Lady Pacers to win 27-25, 27-25 and 25-17 to even their record at 1-1.

Senior Tiffany Vinup led the attack with 21 of 25 attempts and nine kills. Claire Poling had identical attempts with six kills with senior Kelsey Romans adding five kills in 13 attempts and classmate Katie Jackson adding four kills in 17 attempts. Ally Pruiett had three kills in 12 attempts. Setter Caroline Stapleton had 24 assists on those kills.

Vinup led the net game with three blocks with one each from Pruiett and Jackson.

Lucy Carrigan, the team’s libero, led the way with 26 digs followed by Romans with 15, Stapleton with eight and Poling six.

Romans was a perfect 24-for-24 serving with two aces. Vinup had five aces in 17 service attempts. Poling was 9-for-9 while Jacqueline Stapleton was 8-for-8 with an ace. Carrigan was 6-for-7 at the service line and a perfect 24-for-24 in serve reception and 6-for-6 in back row spiking attempts. Jacqueline Stapleton was 9 for 10 in serve reception.

Kinley Morton led the Lady Pacers with eight kills while Kelsi Konkle and Brooke Todd had seven each.

Hope Tankersley served 100 percent for SC with Baylie Scudder at 92 percent, Konkle 91 percent, and Makenzie Mathews at 88 percent.

The two teams will meet again on Sept. 24 at Vevay.

Rising Sun’s season opener was a 25-10, 25-7 and 25-20 loss to perennial power Trinity Lutheran, ranked seventh in Class 1A.

The Lady Cougars outhit Rising Sun 34-12 in kills and had 10 blocks.

Taylor Reynolds was 24-for-24 serving with an ace while Anne Franke had 10 of her team’s kills.

Vinup led RS with four kills while Romans and Poling added three each and Jackson one.

Rising Sun served 90 percent as a team while Romans, Poling and Jacqueline Stapleton perfect from the line. Vinup had the only ace.

Defensively Poling had a block and an assist and Jackson had a solo block. Carrigan led the way with 18 digs followed by Poling with 15, Romans 11, Caroline Stapleton 10, Jacqueline Stapleton 5, Vinup 4 and Jackson 1.

Romans was perfect in serve reception with Carrigan (22-for-27) and Poling (13-for-15) handling most of the returns.

The Rising Sun reserves lost their opening match 25-5 and 25-8 to the Seymour based team.

They bounced back to go three sets before losing to Switzerland County 25-7, 23-25, 15-10.

Rising Sun won game two as Sydney Bostic scored nine points before Abby Wallace had the final three.

Kalli Morton served nine points and Emerson Schroer seven points including five aces to pace SC’s two wins.

Rising Sun was to travel to Oldenburg Academy on Tuesday. They head to Lafayette Central Catholic for a tournament hosted by the number one ranked team.

Rising Sun will open Ohio River Valley Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Shawe followed by a non-conference contest at South Ripley on Thursday.
