Lady Shiners open ORVC with two wins

The Rising Sun Lady Shiners opened the Ohio River Valley Conference season with wins over Southwestern and Milan.

The Lady Shiners won 3-2. Rising Sun posted a 25-18 win in the opening best of five sets then held on for a 25-23 win in the second set.

Southwestern got back into the match with a 25-17 win then rallied from a 22-19 deficit to even the match with a 25-23 win.

The Lady Shiners won the deciding set 15-11.

Tiffany Vinup led the RS attack with 14 kills while Claire Poling had 13, Katie Jackson six and Kelsey Romans five.

Vinup added 18-for-20 serving with five aces. Lucy Carrigan was 19-for-19 with four aces. Jacqueline Stapleton was 18-for-18 and two aces while her sister Caroline Stapleton was 16-for-17 and two aces. Romans was 20-for-22 with two aces.

Vinup had three blocks and Jackson added two.

Carrigan led the defense with 40 digs with Poling adding 18, Romans 17, and Caroline Stapleton 16.

Carrigan handled most of the serve reception with 41 for 45. Poling was 16-for-17, Jacqueline Stapleton 13-for-15 and Romans 12-for-12.

Caroline Stapleton was 42 of 51 in setting attempts with 42 assists.

Southwestern won the reserve match 25-2 and 25-21.

Rising Sun was led in serving by Lucy Phelps 9-for-9 with four aces and Abby Wallace 4-for-4 with two aces.

Danyka Groover had nine kill attempts with one kill while 13-for-14 in serve reception. Phelps was 7-for-9.

Maggie Burkhart led the defense with five digs. Allee Howlett had four while Sydney Bostic had three digs and three assists.

Rising Sun’s varsity captured a 25-14, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-10 win at Milan Thursday with 94.8 percent serving.

Vinup led the serving with 20-for-21 and three aces, Romans had 2-for-27-with an ace, Carrigan 11-for-12 and an ace, Poling 8-for-10, Caroline Stapleton 17-for-18 and Jacqueline Stapleton 7-for-7.

Vinup was 26-for-29 with 10 kills. Romans was 18-for-24 with six kills with Jackson 11-for-13 and six kills, and Ally Pruiett 5-for-6 with three kills. Poling and Carrigan had a kill each.

Vinup had two blocks with a block and assist by Pruiett.

Carrigan led the defense with 11 digs and 28 serve receptions.

Milan won the reserve match 16-25, 25-22 and 15-5.

Groover led RS with three kills and four blocks.

Wallace was 12-for-13 with four aces with Bostic 10-for-11 and two aces, Groover 9-for-10 two aces, Phelps 9 -for-11 two aces.

Phelps and Wallace had eight service receptions while Bostic added six assists.

Rising Sun competed in the Connersville Invitational on Saturday.

They lost to the host 20-25, 26-24, 15-12. They served 95.2 percent with Romans 13-for-13 and an ace.

Brebeuf defeated Rising Sun 25-11, 25-16 and Marion topped the Shiners 25-18, 25-19. The Shiners were 85.7 at the service line against Brebeuf and was limited to just five kills.

Rising Sun hosts Franklin County tonight (Thursday) and Morristown Friday before visiting South Dearborn Tuesday. They return to conference play on Thursday at Switzerland County.
