The Rising Sun Lady Shiners posted a 2-0 win at Milan on Thursday, Sept. 28th to gain a share of the Ohio River Valley Conference soccer title.

Milan had locked up the conference title and Rising Sun needed a win to tie the Indians with a 6-2 record.

A tie would give Milan the title outright and that’s what it looked like might happen in the first half of the Indians’ senior night.

It looked like defending the ORVC champion Shiners would get on the board first as Sydney Pitts got a shot off at the 27:25 mark on a free kick that was saved.

Milan had its scoring chance on a free kick.

Pitts rattled another free kick off the top of bar with 13:50 left in the half and Milan’s next free kick was saved by Shiner keeper Riley Chipman with 5:39 on the clock.

Pitts took the ball on a break and lifted it off a Milan defender when Kinsey Price was in the right spot to put the deflection into goal with 20 seconds until half for a 1-0 lead.

The Shiner attack continued in the second half with senior Kasey Baker’s 30 foot shot hauled in at the 36:54 mark. The Shiners had several corner kick opportunities.

Senior defender Jayden McAlister cleared a ball to Price who gave Rising Sun the insurance they needed with a penalty kick with 18:42 remaining and a 2-0 lead.

Price left the game with leg cramps and McAlister was shaken up also. However, the Shiners had substitutes (unlike two weeks ago) including a strong effort by exchange student Ana Castro (up from the reserve volleyball team).

Assistant Coach Jason Barth noted , “Rising Sun stepped up their defense in the second half, as they moved Pitts to the back sweeper position and tried to hold on to the lead. The Rising Sun midfield, anchored by Kasey Baker, was all over the field harassing the Milan Strikers.”

Rising Sun and Milan both had 10 shots on goal. Chipman had 10 saves.

Southwestern won its final match on Thursday and joined Rising Sun and Milan as tri-champions.

Earlier in the week, Rising Sun posted a 6-0 win at South Ripley.

Kinsey Price scored off a pass from Sydney Pitts to give Lady Shiners an early lead at the 33 min mark.

At the 32 minute mark of first half, Price scored again off a pass from Allison Steele.

At the 24 min mark, Pitts scored the third goal for the Lady Shiners off a pass from Emma Davis.

The second half scoring also started off very quickly, Erica Schraeder received a pass from Pitts and the ball dribbled by the South Ripley goalie at the 39 min mark.

At the 26 min mark, Pitts scored, with the assist going to Kasey Baker.

The Lady Shiners scored their last goal of the game at the 16 min mark, as Price drove a shot into the back of the net.

Chipman, had 3 keeper saves. Rising Sun out shot South Ripley on goal 23 to 3. The two teams will meet again tonight (Thursday) at 5 p.m. in Sectional #46 play hosted by Rising Sun.
