Rising Sun dropped to 0-2 on the season after a 62 to 50 loss at South Decatur on Friday, Nov. 10th.
The game was tied four times in the opening quarter before SD led 15 to 11 at the quarter’s end. The game was tied twice again before the host team took a 23 to 18 lead. More importantly junior center Danyka Groover was whistled for her third foul with less than two minutes remaining until intermission. South Decatur led 29 to 23 at the half.
Groover picked up her fourth foul with 4:06 left in the third quarter with the score 38 to 30. The Cougars closed the quarter on a 12 to 2 run to lead 50 to 32 headed into the final eight minutes of play.
Leading scorer Lucy Carrigan picked up her fourth foul with 6:06 left in the fourth quarter. Despite the foul trouble, Carrigan continued to attack and took advantage at the free throw line with 7-for-10 i the final quarter.
Rising Sun finished 14-for-24 at the line while South Decatur was 21-for-29.
The Shiners continued to battle and closed to within nine (59 to 50) after a Carrigan 3-poionter. Cougar’s Taylor Best closed out the scoring with a pair of baskets to secure her team best 23 points including 1-0-for-12 from the free throw line.
Carrigan led all scorers with 27 points including four 3-poointers. She had seven points, seven deflections, two steals two assists and a block. She had an uncharacteristic seven turnovers with several called on her jump stop moves.
Sophomore Sydney Pitts scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Danyka Groover added seven points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman Maddi Wilson had a solid game. She didn’t have a field goal but was 4-for-6 at the line and grabbed five rebounds.
Sydney Bostic closed out the scoring with two points while grabbing nine rebounds. The Shiners outrebounded the Cougars 45 to 33. Saige Grover had five boards and Emma Levi three.
Rising Sun had 21 turnovers to 14 for the Cougars. Shiner shooting improved from its opening night 19 percent to 16-for55 or 29 percent. South Decatur was 19-for-63 for 30 percent.
South (1-3) had three players in double figures led by Best, Madison Owens had 14 and Sierra Lang 12.
Rising Sun was to host Lawrenceburg on Wednesday. They will host Switzerland County Friday and Waldron on Saturday.
