The Rising Sun Lady Shiners volleyball team lost a pair of hard fought five set matches last week including a home loss to Ohio River Valley Conference rival Switzerland County on Thursday.
Coach Erin Gregory’s squad has three front line starters out with injury (Lucy Phelps, Danyka Groover, Lucy Carrigan) forcing the elevation of reserves Abby Wallace and Emma Levi to varsity action.
Rising Sun won the opening set 25-22 over the Lady Pacers who came back to win 25-23 in the second of the best three of five sets. Rising Sun took the lead with a 25-23 win before Switzerland county rallied from a 7-0 deficit to take the fourth set 25-22. That set up the final set, won by SC 15-13.
Switzerland County got the serve in the final set and took a 6-2 lead. They led 10-6 when Jacqueline Stapleton served five straight for a 12-10 Shiner advantage. A pair of kills by Allison Furnish put the Pacers back on top 13-12. A block by Levi evened the score before the Pacers took the final two points to win the match.
Rising Sun seniors Claire Poling, Ally Pruiett and Jacqueline Stapleton continued to carry the Shiner hitting attack. Poling had 37 hits including 13 kills while Pruiett was good on 29 attacks with eight kills and six blocks. Jacqueline Stapleton continued to be the most proficient attacker with only four errors in 35 attempts with six kills. Levi added a trio of kills and was in on a total of six blocks. Caroline Stapleton had three kills, Sydney Bostic two and Wallace on.
The Shiners served a season low 78 percent despite Caroline Stapleton’s 13-for-14 with eight aces. Sister Jacqueline was 6-for9 serving with Bostic 6-for-7 and two aces, Poling 4-for-6, Pruiett 3-for-3, Wallace 5-for-9 with three aces and freshman Kassidy Romans 3-for-3.
Rising Sun lost a five set match at South Dearborn on Tuesday, Sept. 20th.
They took the first set 25-16 then lost 27-25 before winning 25-19 and dropping a 25-17 decision in set four. South Dearborn took the final set 15-12.
Poling led the hitting attack with 14 kills while Jacqueline Stapleton had six Pruiett four and Levi one. Wallace did not have a kill but did not have a spiking error in 11 tries.
However, Wallace led the Rising Sun servers with 14-for-18 including eight aces. Poling was 9-for-9, Pruiett 9-for-10 and two aces, Caroline Stapleton 8-for-11 and an ace, Bostic 6-for-6, and Jacqueline Stapleton 5-for-6. Rising Sun was 51-for-60 or 85 percent serving.
Bostic led the team with 29 digs while Jacqueline Stapleton had 31 service receptions and Caroline Stapleton 23 assists. Pruiett had six blocks and two assists while Levi had a block and two block assists.
South Dearborn outhit the Shiners 53 kills to 25 while serving 88-for-100.
The two matches saw Rising Sun record 257 spiking attempts with 71 kills and just 33 errors.
Rising Sun hosts South Decatur tonight (Thursday) and host a four team invitatilnal starting at 11:30 Saturday.. The Shiners close out ORVC play at South Ripley on Tuesday, Oct. 11th and at Jac-Cen-Del on Thursday, Oct. 13th.
