Lady Pacers wrap regular season with 61-24 win over Shawe


The Switzerland County Lady Pacer varsity basketball team closed its regular season and prepared for tourney play last Friday night with a 61-24 pounding of the Shawe Lady Hilltoppers.

The game was never really in doubt, as Switzerland County jumped to an 8-0 lead to open the game on back-to-back three-pointers from Makenzie Mathews and Hailee Lay and a couple of freethrows by Brooke Todd.

After Shawe got a freethrow from Sarelia Garcia and a three-pointer by Claire Higgins; the Lady Pacers got back on track with a bucket by Eve Galbreath. Claire Higgins scored again for the Lady Hilltoppers, Switzerland County went on another run, with Eve Galbreath kicking off the run with a three-point play; and Brooke Todd followed that with a three-pointer.

After Sarelia Garcia made two freethrows, a basket by Eve Galbreath closed the quarter with Switzerland County up by 10, 18-8.

The Lady Pacers blew up the contest as the second quarter got underway, scoring 15 straight points as Shawe would go nearly seven minutes without a point.

It all started when Kelsi Konkle ripped down a rebound and executed a perfect outlet pass that led to a layup for Brooke Todd. Whitley Schirmer then hit two straight three-pointers; and Brooke Todd followed that with a runner in the lane.

Hailee Lay and Eve Galbreath then followed that with baskets, and Makenzie Mathews closed the run with a freethrow.

With 1:15 to play, the Lady Pacers held a 32-8 lead.

Claire Higgins scored the lone bucket for the Lady Hilltoppers, but Kelsi Konkle’s jumper closed the first half with Switzerland County in front, 35-10.

The rampage continued as the second half opened, with Eve Galbreath and Kelsi Konkle scoring to open the third. Shawe then got baskets from Katelyn Moore and Stephanie Snodgrass; but Switzerland County raced right back with another run of 11 straight points to close the period.

Kelsi Konkle got things rolling with a basket; and Eve Galbreath followed that with a freethrow and then a basket. Taylar Jordan then scored from the baseline; and Hailee Lay hit a freethrow. Whitley Schirmer then connected on her third three-pointer of the game as the horn sounded, and the squads went to the final quarter with the Lady Pacers out in front, 50-14.

The fourth quarter saw Taylar Jordan keep things going with a freethrow; and after Shawe scored, Eve Galbreath scored inside and Brooke Todd made two freethrows. Claire Higgins hit a three-pointer for Shawe, but Whitley Schirmer hit a basket.

The Lady Hilltoppers got a basket from Maddie Waller and a three-pointer from Megg Hensler, but Switzerland County closed out the game with baskets by Hope Tankersley and Bre Braun, and the final horn sounded the end of the assault, with the Lady Pacers winning 61-24.

Eve Galbreath continued her climb up the all time scoring leaders ladder with 16 points; and both Brooke Todd and Whitley Schirmer each were in double figures with 11.

Kelsi Konkle and Hailee Lay each had six points; Makenzie Mathews finished with four; Taylar Jordan had three; and Bre Braun and Hope Tankersley each had two.

Claire Higgins led Shawe with 12 points.

Shooting was the key in the game, as Switzerland County shot 56-percent from the floor; while Shawe shot just 25-percent – with just eight points in the first half.
