Lady Pacers will defend Sectional title, draw Milan in the bye game

After wrapping up their regular season tonight (Thursday) with a home varsity only game with Madison Shawe, coach Wayne Ellegood’s Switzerland County Lady Pacers will open defense of their sectional title next week.

This year’s tournament will be held at Southwestern High School. The tournament will open with two first round games on Tuesday, February 8th.

The first game of the tourney will begin at 6 p.m., and will feature Southwestern and North Decatur. Tuesday’s second game is scheduled to begin at approximately 7:30 p.m., and will feature South Ripley and Lawrenceburg.

Tuesday’s two winners will then play in the 6 p.m. game on Friday, February 11th. That night’s second semifinal will feature Switzerland County and Milan.

The two winners on Friday night will then play for the sectional championship on Saturday, February 12th, with the game getting underway at 7:30 p.m.

Switzerland County athletic director Kent Dunning said that tickets are being presold for $9 that are good for all three sectional sessions. Those tickets are available in the high school office, and will also be available at tonight’s (Thursday’s) home game with Madison Shawe.

Presale tickets will be available until noon on Tuesday. Those wanting to purchase a ticket for a single session may do so at the door. Those tickets are $5 each..

The winner of Southwestern Sectional #44 will play in the Shenandoah Regional, and will play the winner of the Knightstown Sectional in the regional’s second game. The regional will be played on Saturday, February 19th.

Teams in the Knightstown Sectional include: Knightstown, Eastern Hancock, Frankton, Shenandoah, Alexandria, Muncie Burris, and Wapahani.

The first round of the Shenandoah Regional will feature the champions of the Cambridge City Lincoln and Indian Creek Sectionals.
Teams in the Cambridge City Lincoln Sectional include: Centerville, Hagerstown, Cambridge City Lincoln, Northeastern, Winchester, and Union County.

Teams participating at Indian Creek include: Speedway, Indianapolis Scecina, Park Tudor, Heritage Christian, Triton Central, and Indian Creek.

The winner of the Shenandoah Regional will then advance to semistate play on Saturday, February 26th, at a site yet to be determined. The state finals will be played in Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday, March 5th.

Other area teams are also preparing for sectional play in different classes.

— Madison is participating in Class 3A Sectional 30 at Silver Creek High School. The Lady Cubs will play Scottsburg in the bye game on Friday night. Tuesday’s games will featured Corydon versus Salem and Silver Creek versus North Harrison.

— South Dearborn is participating in Class 3A Sectional 28 at Greensburg. The Lady Knights will play in Tuesday’s second game against Franklin County. Tuesday’s first game features Rushville and Batesville; with Greensburg and Connersville playing in the bye game on Friday.

— In Class 1A Sectional 58 being held at Jac-Cen-Del High School, there are only five teams participating.

Tuesday will feature only one game — Oldenburg Academy and Rising Sun.
There will then be two semifinal games on Friday, with the first game pitting South Decatur against Madison Shawe. Jac-Cen-Del will play the winner of Tuesday’s game in the second game on Friday.

Of interest here is Class 4A Sectional 14 being held at Columbus East.

Bloomington North, which is ranked eighth in Class 4A with a record of 16-2, is coached by former Switzerland County boys varsity coach Steve Goddard.

The Lady Cougars will play Columbus East in Tuesday’s second game. East Central and Shelbyville will play in Tuesday’s opener; and Bloomington South and Columbus North will play in Friday’s bye game.
