Lady Pacers open season with win over Ripley

The Switzerland County Lady Pacers opened the softball season on Monday night with a 7-2 victory over South Ripley.

It was the first game that the Lady Pacers were able to play, as the first six games of the schedule were canceled due to weather.

Sara Craig scored two runs in the game; and single runs were scored by Ashley Bright, Melisa Raiser, Rachel Rodgers, Megan McCarty, and Morgan Ross.

The team also recorded nine hits on the night: Amber Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple; Sara Craig was 2-for-3 with a double; Rachel Rodgers was 2-for-4; Megan McCarty and Morgan Ross were both 1-for-3; and Ashley Bright and Courtney Cole were both 1-for-4.

Ashley Bright, Courtney Cole, Amber Smith, and Rachel Rodgers all knocked in runs; and the Lady Pacers had four stolen bases, one each by: Tanya Sefton, Ashley Bright, Melisa Raiser, and Morgan Ross.

Becky Turner recorded five strikeouts in just two innings of work on the mound; and Kayla Konkle pitched five scoreless innings as the starter.

Being our first game, I was pleased with our defense, but our bats were a little slow,” head coach Steven Konkle said. “Overall, I was pleased with our play.”

The Switzerland County junior varsity softball team also captured a 10-6 win over South Ripley on Monday night.

Chelsea Peters, Jenna Daugherty, and Hailee Smith all scored two runs each; while Maggie Armstrong, Rachel Tressler, Angela Swanson, and Danielle Ballard scored one run apiece.

Jenna Daugherty led the hitting attack by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base; while Chelsea Peters was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Hailee Smith was 2-for-2 with an RBI; Rachel Tressler was 1-for-2 with an RBI; Karista Wengert was 1-for-3 with an RBI; and Maggie Armstrong was 1-for-4.

Jenna Daugherty, Chelsea Peters, Karista Wengert, Rachel Tressler, and Hailee Smith all had stolen bases; and on the mound; Ashley Johnson had four strikeouts and Chelsea Peters had two strikeouts in relief.
