The Switzerland County Lady Pacers soccer “Season of Firsts” came to an end on Saturday night with a 3-0 loss to Oldenburg Academy in the championship game of Sectional #45 at Rising Sun.
• The Lady Pacers opened sectional play on Tuesday, October 8th with a 1-0 victory over South Ripley.
Raylinn Kappes scored the only goal of the game to lead the Lady Pacers. Coach Tully Anders said that the defense showed up big again, recording its seventh shutout of the season.
• On Thursday, October 10th, the Lady Pacers played conference rival Rising Sun in the sectional semifinal.
Raylinn Kappes scored two minutes in to give the Lady Pacers a 1-0 lead; but Rising Sun scored the equalizer in the first half to tie the game at the break, 1-1.
Coach Anderson said that the Lady Pacers made quick half time adjustments and tightened up their defense. Both teams battled with the Pacers dominating possession and control but neither team could find the net.
With six minutes left to play Kappes found Matty Anderson at midfield on a cross. Anderson settled the ball and pushed through and out ran a quick Shiner defense. Anderson took the ball passed the 18 drawing the goalie out and made arguably, the shot of the year flipping the ball over the keepers head for the game winner. The Lady Pacers then held on to advance to their second straight sectional championship.
“This team was very special to Cindy and me,”Anderson said, referring to his wife and assistant coach. “A great mix of seniors and underclassmen. We are so proud of where our program is and how much farther it will go after this.”
Switzerland County ended the season at 9-4-4 and earned its first ORVC Championship at 5-1-2 in conference play.
