The Switzerland County Lady Pacer varsity soccer team hosted its third annual ‘River Battle Invite’ on Saturday, September 28th.
• In the first game the Lady Pacers defeated Gallatin County 3-1.
Matty Anderson assisted on the first goal on a cross to the far post, where Raylinn Kappes found the net. Anderson then took a swing pass from Kappes and beat the defender to find the back of the net from the 18 for Switzerland County’s second goal of the game.
Kayley Jones then finished out the scoring for Switzerland County on an unassisted shot.
• The second game Centerville defeated Carroll County 4-1 to earn the slot against the Lady Pacers in the title game.
• The championship game was back and forth, as Centerville and the Lady Pacers both performed diligently in the 90 degree heat. The teams battled to a 0-0 tie at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Pacers struck first when senior captain Anderson received a pass on the wing from Kappes and slammed it in the net for a 1-0 Pacer lead.
The Lady Bulldogs then evened the score on a free kick that Coach Tully Anderson said confused the Lady Pacer defense.
The teams battled evenly for a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation.
Per tournament rules, the game went straight to penalty kick shootout; and in that shootout the Lady Bulldogs prevailed 4-2 — for a 2-1 final score to claim the championship.
“It was fun to play Centerville,” Anderson said. “A very classy group of ladies, coaches and parents. We left everything we had on the field. One mix-up on one play cost us. I told the girls this was a learning experience for them for Sectionals. We will be ready.”
