Lady Pacers close year with win

The Switzerland County Lady Pacer varsity basketball team closed its regular season on Friday night with a 45-29 “Mike Night” victory over Madison Shawe.

Brooke Todd led the Lady Pacers with 18 points on the night; while Eve Galbreath was also in double figures with 14.

Both teams got off to a slow start, with Madison Shawe taking an 8-5 lead after one quarter. The Lady Pacers started off cool from the floor, getting only three freethrows from Eve Galbreath until there was just 11-seconds left, when Makenzie Mathews scored on a jumper.

Switzerland County got rolling offensively in the second period, and the Lady Pacer defense also stiffened, allowing the Lady Hilltoppers just three points over the eight minute span.

The Lady Pacers accounted for nine points in the period, with Eve Galbreath controlling the inside and accounting for seven points in the quarter. Bre Ricketts had the other basket; and the teams went to the halftime break with Switzerland County holding a 14-11 advantage.

It was the second half where the Lady Pacers began to control the game offensively and pull away from Shawe. Switzerland County had 15 points in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth, while the Lady Hilltoppers managed just 18 points in the second half.

Brooke Todd ran wild in the half, scoring eight points in the third quarter to match Madison Shawe’s entire team output; and the Lady Pacers also got offense from Hailee Lay, who had a pair of freethrows in the quarter.

Makenzie Mathews continued her outstanding outside shooting, connecting on a three-pointer in the stanza; and Eve Galbreath scored again in the lane.

After three periods, Switzerland County had pulled out to a 29-19 lead.

The final quarter saw the Lady Pacers win the period by a 16-10 count; and Brooke Todd continued her offensive onslaught, scoring 10 points herself in the closing period. Eve Galbreath, Makenzie Mathews, and Hailee Lay also had baskets to close out the win.

Final score: Switzerland County 45, Madison Shawe 29.

In addition to her 18 points, Brooke Todd also had three rebounds and three assists. Eve Galbreath paired her 14 points with 15 rebounds to record a double-double, and she also had two blocked shots.

Makenzie Mathews had seven points, three rebounds and three assists; Hailee Lay finished with four points and three assists; and Bre Ricketts had two points and three boards.

Taylor Grote led the Lady Hilltoppers with 11 points.
