Lady Pacer track team earns Conference crown in dominating fashion

The Switzerland County Lady Pacer track team – led by a school record-setting performance by the 3,200-meter relay team – captured its fifth straight team championship of the Ohio River Valley Conference on Tuesday night.

Running on their home track, Switzerland County tallied 152 points to easily outdistance runner up South Ripley, with finished with 69 points. Jac-Cen-Del was third with 59 points; followed by Rising Sun with 58 points; Southwestern with 48 points; Milan with 43; and Shawe Memorial with 34.

Highlighting an exciting night was the establishment of a new school record in the 3,200-meter relay by Lady Pacer runners Leah Anders, Matty Anderson, Maggie Clayton, and Mackenzie Covington. The squad ran a time of 10:28.4 to set the new mark.

Individually, it was a dominating performance by the Lady Pacers, with hurdle duo of Moriah Northcutt and Ally Furnish doing serious points damage, going first and second in both races. Northcutt won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of :17.9; and the senior also captured the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in a time of :51.4. Freshman Furnish was right behind, earned second place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of :18.1; and took home the red ribbon in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in a time of :51.9.

Sophomore Anders continued her outstanding season by earned the championship of the 800-meter run in a time of 2:30.66; and also winning their event was the 1,600-meter relay team of Northcutt, Covington, Aleiah Thomas, and Anders winning in a time of 4:24.2.

Second place finishes were recorded by Covington in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:05.7; Aleiah Thomas in the high jump with a height of 4’10” and the 200-meter dash in a time of :28.0; Natalie Newman in both the shot put (33’9 1/2″) and the discus (93’9″); and the 400-meter relay team of Emma Giglio, Sydney Thomas, McKenli Scudder, and Aleiah Thomas in a time of :55.7.

Third place points were earned by Northcutt in the long jump with a distance of 14’3″; Scudder in the 100-meter dash in a time of :14.0; and Anderson in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:53.42.

Scudder was fourth in the 200-meter dash in a time of :29.7; Giglio was fourth in the high jump with a height of 4’6″; and Jody Breeck was fourth in the shot put with a distance of 29’11”.

Clayton finished fifth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:07.7; Cameron Ray was fifth in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 14:33; Furnish was fifth in the long jump with a distance of 13’10 1/2″; and Breeck was fifth in the discus with a distance of 87’8 1/2″.

Zoe Cole was sixth in the 1,600-meter run in a time of 6:49.9; and Josie Meyer was seventh in the 1,600-meter run in a time of 7:00.9.

Switzerland County now heads to the Sectional meet, which will be held in Jeffersonville this Tuesday, May 16th, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
