Lady Pacer softball claims last inning win over Owen County

The Switzerland County Lady Pacer softball team has been picking up steam as the season progresses, including a win over Owen County on Monday night in the team’s final at bat.

Switzerland County won by a score of 8-7 by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Originally down 7-1, the Lady Pacers scored two runs in the bottom of the third; a lone run in the fifth; and two more in the sixth before the last inning heroics, as sophomore Lauren Edwards got the game-winning hit.

Becca Sittloh scored two runs and collected two hits; Brittany Bright had three hits and scored a run; Hayley South had two hits and a run scored; Lauren Edwards had three hits; Trisha Smith had a hit and a run scored; Kali Carfield had a hit and scored a run; Shelby O’Neal had a hit; and Hannah Chapman scored two runs.

Ashley Watson pitched well after allowing three runs in the opening inning and four runs in the third; and Rachel Griffin pitched one inning to pick up the win in relief.

The win puts the Switzerland County record at 3-4 on the year, 2-1 in ORVC play.

Here’s a look at the season to this point:

– On March 31st the Lady Pacers fell to South Dearborn by a 7-1 score. Kali Carfield scored the lone Switzerland County run; and Rachel Griffin suffered the loss on the mound.

– On April 2nd Switzerland County lost to Henryville by a score of 14-4. Coach Steven Konkle said that the game was close until the sixth inning, when Henryville scored seven runs.

Offensively, Trisha Smith was 3-for-3 with two doubles; and Kali Carfield was 1-for-3 with a double. Runs were scored by Hayley South, two by Trisha Smith, and Brooke Dickerson.

In the second game against Henryville in the doubleheader, the Lady Pacers fell by an 11-5 count.

Hayley South led the offense, going 3-for-4; while Trisha Smith was 2-for-4. Scoring runs were Brittany Bright, Hayley South, Trisha Smith, Kali Carfield, and Hannah Chapman.

- Switzerland County picked up its first win of the season on April 5th with a 13-3 victory over Madison Shawe.

Rachel Griffin pitched the complete game to pick up the win on the mound, giving up just two runs in the first inning and another in the fifth.

Offensively, Switzerland County scored seven runs in the second inning; two runs in the fourth; and four more in the fifth. Leading the offensive outburst was Trisha Smith, who hit a two-run homer in the second; and Hayley South, who connected for a solo blast in the fourth.

Becca Sittloh was 3-for-4 and scored two runs; Hayley South was 2-for-3 and scored three runs; and Trisha Smith was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

- The winning ways kept coming on April 8th as Switzerland County defeated Jac-Cen-Del by a score of 7-2.

This time it was Ashley Watson hurling the complete game gem to record the win, allowing both Jac-Cen-Del runs in the opening inning before shutting the door for the rest of the game.

Runs were scored by Becca Sittloh, Hayley South, Trisha Smith, Hannah Chapman, Karoline Park, and Emily White. Picking up RBI’s were Hayley South, Trisha Smith, Karoline Park, and Lauren Edwards.

– On April 13th Switzerland County lost to Milan by a 10-1 score.

Coach Konkle reports that it was a 1-0 game through the first four innings, but Milan scored five times in the fifth, three in the sixth, and a single run in the seventh to claim the win.

Switzerland County got its lone run in the seventh when Mikayla Turner singled; Becca Sittloh doubled, and Hayley South singled.

Hayley South was 4-for-4 on the night with a double; Becca Sittloh had a double; and Lauren Edwards was 2-for-3.

The Lady Pacers travel to South Ripley tomorrow (Friday) for a makeup game; and then host Franklin County on Saturday for varsity and jayvee games beginning at 10 a.m.
