The Class A Sectional 60 was billed as one of the top sectionals in 2018 with Rising Sun moving to sixth in last weeks coaches poll ahead of seventh ranked Hauser and 11th ranked Jac-Cen-Del bidding for the right to advance to regional play next Tuesday.
The tourney opened Monday with the host Lady Shiners looking to get a win over North Decatur to advance to play against Hauser.
The Lady Chargers ended those hopes and the Shiners season with a 5-0 win.
It was the second time Rising Sun has been shutout this season.
North Decatur outhit Rising Sun 11 to 3 and played error-less ball.
Rising Sun was visitors on the score board and looked to get off to a quick start. Emma Levi walked then Sydney Bostic singled. Lindsay Montgomery reached on an error to lad the bases. Sydney Pitts grounded back to pitcher Emma Luttel who got the force at home then Abby Wallace grounded into a force out at third, leaving the bases loaded.
Charger lead-off Kara Muckerheide (had both ND hits in an earlier loss to RS) singled but was left stranded at third.
Lucy Phelps singled in the second but was doubled off first on a fly ball to left.
The Chargers put together a bloop single and hard hit ball to right. A bunt single loaded the bases which brought Muckerheide to the plate. She singled in two runs but was thrown out at second by Bostic trying to advance on the throw home.
ND opened the third with another bunt single that turned into a runner on second on the errant throw. A delayed steal of third turned into a 3-0 lead when the throw from pitcher Sydney Pitts was kicked loose from third baseman Tyrrah Miller.
It was 4-0 in the fourth after a walk and RBI triple by Keela Crosland.
Bostic picked up her second hit of the game in the sixth but courtesy runner Hannah Warr was doubled off first on a pop out to short.
Muckerheide picked up her third hit of the evening to drive in the final run bottom of the sixth.
Rising Sun had defeated North Decatur 11-1 in five innings earlier this season. Luttel went just one-third of an inning allowing four runs and walking six. Luttel’s control was much better allowing just one walk and striking out one in winning the rematch.
Rising Sun’s season ended at 16-6 while North Decatur improved to 12-9. Caroline Stapleton is the only senior on this year’s squad.
The second game between Hauser and Oldenburg Academy was postponed by severe weather with Hauser leading 6-0 in the second. The game was set to be finished on Tuesday with Tuesday’s regular games rescheduled for Wednesday and the finals on Thursday.
