Jessie Duvall leads Lady Pacers to big win
The Switzerland County Lady Pacer varsity basketball team kept its offensive firepower rolling last Tuesday night with a home game against rival Rising Sun, riding a strong first quarter to a 61-29 win that returned the “Ruler of the River” trophy back to Switzerland County.
The Lady Pacers got off to a quick start, scoring 19 points in the opening period while holding their guests to just 10.
Jessie Duvall had the hot hand early, connecting on two field goals and three freethrows for seven points; while Aleiah Thomas and Jaden Harrell each had three field goals for six points in the opening stanza.
Maddi Wilson had five points on a three-pointer and a field goal to lead Rising Sun in scoring.
Switzerland County kept the offense rolling in the second period, scoring 14 more points — and this time it was Kyah Chase who took control. The sophomore had nine points in the quarter on three field goals and a three-pointer while Josie Meyer connected on a three-pointer and Thomas added a field goal.
Rising Sun continued its steady play, again scoring 10 points in the quarter. This time the Lady Shiners were led by Baylee Morris, who had five points — and Wilson again contributed five, hitting another three-pointer and adding a pair of freethrows.
At the half, Switzerland County held a 33-20 lead.
The third quarter was where the Lady Pacers really created some separation, as Switzerland County outscored Rising Sun 12-3 over the eight minute span.
Switzerland County was led by Chase and Jessie Duvall — each of whom had five points on a three-pointer and a field goal; while Thomas added two freethrows to the total.
The spurt put the Lady Pacers on top by 22 points — 45-23 — heading into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth, Switzerland County posted 16 more points while Rising Sun managed just six.
Jessie Duvall took over in the final stanza, scoring seven points on a pair of field goals and three freethrows; and Maddie Duvall drilled a three-pointer. Chase had a bucket; as did Thomas and Hannah Hayes.
Morris had four points in the fourth for the Lady Shiners, and Wilson added the other two.
Final score: Switzerland County 61, Rising Sun 29.
Jessie Duvall had 19 points to lead the Lady Pacers in the game; while Chase finished with 16 points and Thomas made it three in double figures, as she added to her school-record total with 12 more.
Harrell had six; Maddie Duvall and Meyer each had three; and Hayes contributed two.
Morris led Rising Sun with 14 points; and Wilson had 13. Kieran Groover had the other two.
In Tuesday night’s junior varsity game, Switzerland County defeated Rising Sun by a score of 3523.
Nora Hankins was the leading scorer in the contest for the Lady Pacers, as she had 12 points; and both Chloey Thomas and Gracie White each had six.
Rochelle Bolton had five points; Jayden Thomas had four; and Hannah Hayes had two.
