(1) The Vevay Town Council discussed the slippage problem at the new water tank site on the west end of town. The tank itself is secure, but the eroding soil on the side of the hill could cause breaks in the water lines.
(2) Kyle Coates, grandson of Opal Coates of Vevay and the late Bob Coates; and son of Bob and Rita Coates of Brownstown, is a student trainer for the national champion soccer team at Indiana University.
(3) Jefferson-Craig Elementary School principal Darrell Hansel was honored for his leadership and service with the “Salute to Leadership” award by the National Association of Elementary School Principals; the National Middle School Association; and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
(4) Russell Martin of Vevay was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital after the lawn mower on which he was riding was struck by a vehicle on Ferry Street in Vevay.
(5) Joan Mondary’s life was spotlighted in the Vevay Newspapers. She was the guest of honor at a surprise party in honor of her 80th birthday, and all 10 of her children attended the celebration.
(6) Heavy rain hit Switzerland County early in the new year. Rain flooded county roads, with eight roads being closed by the Switzerland County Highway Department until the water receded.
(7) Switzerland County Lady Pacer Jaclyn Ranz was honored as the MVP of the Rivertown Classic Basketball Tournament. Teammates Ashley Chase and Brittany Cole joined her on the All Tournament team; as the Lady Pacers captured the tourney title with a victory over Lawrenceburg. The Switzerland County varsity cheerleaders won the cheerleading competition for the second year in a row.
(8) The tsunami that struck Southeast Asia hit particularly close to home for Switzerland County High School exchange student Parin Pongpipttanapan. Although the tsunami resulted in the deaths of more than 150,000 people, the exchange student was relieved to hear that all of his relatives were safe.
(9) Allensville correspondent Lauretta Borgman was recuperating at Dearborn County Hospital after suffering a broken hip. She suffered the injury after falling on the icy concrete at her home.
(10) The Switzerland County YMCA installed a bank of televisions in the exercise area of the facility. The TVs can be used by members working on the tread mills or other machines to make the time pass more quickly.
