In spite of acknowledging all sorts of issues and problems with the testing; and in spite of eliminating it going forward and replacing it with another format, the state of Indiana has released the findings from ISTEP standardized testing that were taken last spring.

Statewide, scores were down, and that trend continued here in Switzerland County.

– At Jefferson-Craig Elementary School: 57.9-percent of students passed the English portion of the test; while 58.5-percent of students passed the math portion of the test. Overall, 48.6-percent of students passed both sections of the exam.

– At Switzerland County Elementary School: 59.8-percent of students passed the English portion of the test; while 43.6-percent of students passed the math portion of the test. Overall, 39.8-percent of students passed both sections of the exam.

– At Switzerland County Middle School: 55.6-percent of students passed the English portion of the test; while 58.3-percent of students passed the math portion of the test. Overall, 448.1-percent of students passed both sections of the exam.

Breaking the corporation figures down by grade level:

– In grade 3: 83 students took the English test, with 68.0-percent passing; 66 students took the math exam, with 54.1-percent passing; and overall 50.8-percent of students in the third grade passed both sections.

– In grade 4: 61 students took the English test, with 63.5-percent passing; 56 students took the math exam, with 58.3-percent passing; and overall 51.0-percent of students in the fourth grade passed both sections.

– In grade 5: 48 students took the English test, with 44.4-percent passing; 47 students took the math exam, with 43.5-percent passing; and overall 31.5-percent of students in the fifth grade passed both sections.

– In grade 6: 67 students took the English test, with 59.3-percent passing; 50 students took the math exam, with 43.9-percent passing; and overall 40.7-percent of students in the sixth grade passed both sections.

– In grade 7: 50 students took the English test, with 53.2-percent passing; 65 students took the math exam, with 72.2-percent passing; and overall 51.7-percent of students in the seventh grade passed both sections.

– In grade 8: 55 students took the English test, with 57.9-percent passing; 40 students took the math exam, with 44.4-percent passing; and overall 36.7-percent of students in the third grade passed both sections.

– For the school corporation in grades 3-8: 364 students took the English test, with 58.0-percent passing; 324 students took the math exam, with 52.3-percent passing; and overall 43.7-percent of students in grades 3-8 passed both sections.

Statewide, about 52-percent of students passed the English and math sections of ISTEP, which is down from 53.5-percent of students who passed both sections in 2015.

Overall, 66.1-percent of students in grades 3-8 passed English; which is down from 67.3-percent a year ago; while 58.9-percent of students passed the math section, which is down from 61-percent in 2015.
