House fire Friday night is fatal for Vevay resident

A house fire on Friday night, January 23rd, was fatal for a Vevay man.

Jefferson Craig Fire and Rescue responded to a fire at Riverview Drive near the Ogle Haus Inn at approximately 11:45 p.m. Friday night. When firefighters arrived, the structure was almost fully engulfed in flames.

Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the body of Ronald Lee Jarvis, age 73, in the lower level of the structure. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Ronald Jarvis was born in Batesville in 1941, and was a 1959 graduate of Versailles High School. After attending electronics training in Indianapolis, he was employed by IBM in Columbus, Indiana for 32 years as a service technician and field manager. He retired in 1992.

He participated in a bowling league while living in Columbus, was an avid coin collector, and also enjoyed fishing and his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He collected Corvair automobiles, and participated in Vevay’s ‘On the River’ car show.

He moved to Vevay in 2006.

He is survived by one son: Keith (Susan) Jarvis of Toledo, Ohio; two daughters: Kellie (Brian) Jarvis Compton of Indianapolis and Becky (Shannon) Jarvis Ogle of Westport, Indiana. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one sister.

Prior to the arrival of the fire department, bystanders attempted to make entry into the structure in an effort to help anyone who might have been inside. Doors were opened, windows were broken out, and a garden hose was used to try and combat the fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters, found the bi-level structure nearly fully engulfed in flames. At that point neighbors and others said that they believed that Ronald Jarvis may be inside the structure; but due to the progression of the fire, emergency personnel were unable to make entry.

The victim was identified by Switzerland County Coroner Lewis Fritter.

Assisting at the scene were the Moorefield and East Enterprise Volunteer Fire Departments.

The scene was investigated by the Indiana Fire Marshal, Jeff-Craig Fire, and the Switzerland County Coroner’s office.
