On Friday, August 9th, seven Switzerland County High School “Letters About Literature” semifinalists received their final awards and a copy of the book in which their works were published.
Teacher Janet Hendricks, with the help of Principal Gregg Goewert, presented awards to her students whose ‘Letter to the Author’ achieved the level of semifinalist. The letters were written late last fall as a class assignment in which the student was asked to write the author (living or dead) and explain how the book had affected the student’s life or impacted it in some way.
Students who were published as semifinalists included: Carleigh Hughes, Amber Johnson, Nicole Leap, Charles Reynolds, Tyler Teel, Dustin Tice, and Adeli Kinne.
Students competed with classmates and writers from all over Indiana for this part of the annual national contest.
The 2013 winning letters from Indiana students were printed in a book titled “2013 Letters About Literature Anthology, Winning Letters & Poems from Young Hoosier Writers”.
The Indiana State Library and Indiana Center for the Book printed enough books for each winning school to receive two books; each winning teacher to receive one book; and each winning student to receive one book.
