Handbook approved, Beitzel says keep music


The Switzerland County School Board of Trustees approved the 2016-17 High School Handbook at its regular monthly meeting on Monday, July 18th in the school administration building.

Vice-president Katie Collier conducted the meeting after president Nancy Peters resigned a month earlier. A special meting to interview candidates for the position will be held today (Thursday.

The board gave medals to the Archery team members for competing in the World championships in Myrtle Beach.

Board member Jill Cord opened discussion on the handbook asking if marching band participation was tied to the student’s grade. It is not.

Principal Greg Goewert noted the drug policy encourages first time offenders to attend school events.

It’s another reason to say no.

Wayne Daugherty opened discussion of graduation recognition policy. Goewert noted he handbook is worded from last year’s school board minutes. There will be one speaker. The board voted 4-2 to approve with Collier, Cord, Joe Bennett and Josh Deck voting in favor and Daugherty and Bill Roberts voting no.

Tammy Beitzel received a gift for her service. She retired after 26 1/2 years with the band and music department.

She thanked band parents, students and her father for instilling her love of music. She has struggled two years. There have been many fond memories. It is a bittersweet day, she noted then begged the board to make sure they will always have a music program.

Bennett gave a facilities report noting the Jeff Craig renovation should be complete by July 25th. There were some concession stand issues and there was discussion about the old administration building being used for the alumni or historical society.

Cord reported an endowment balance of $414,000 with $1,662,000 long term investments and $541,000 in short term funds. The bylaws are being reviewed to see is the board needs its own attorney. The board will have a walk through of Jeff Craig on Tuesday, July 26th at 5 p.m.

Superintendent Mike Jones reported negotiations are underway with anther meeting planned for July 22nd.

The board approved a MOU with the Community Mental Health to have an in house counselor to help address issues. They agreed to a memorandum of understanding with Ivy Tech where students pay half of the tuition except for the welding program.

The board approved bonding of the extracurricular account secretary and a Go Solutions Indiana Service Agreement. The free and reduced lunch policy was approved and approval was given to sell an old bus to another community.

The board approved the creation of an attendance secretary position at Jeff-Craig Elementary. The cost is approximately $25,000 depending on benefits.

The board reviewed a staff evaluation form and approved a 21st Century consultant contract.

Transportation department changes included bus driver Ken Byars to route #30 (Kathy Williams route), Jean Little to route #32 to Byars route, Sarah Hemingway as bus monitor on the special needs route, Mickey Ray for the Blind and Deaf School route to Scottsburg and Lawrence Brown as full time pre-kindergarten and special needs route.

The board accepted the resignation of Veronica Buckler, middle school language arts and Sandra Bowling, Jeff Craig elementary nurse.

Debbie Rayles was approved as cafeteria secretary with Theresa Theetge named middle school cook but will work five hours a week helping custodians.

Molly Tunny was hired as a new elementary teacher. She had worked last school year.

Melissa Mullen was selected for the instructional elementary resource.

The next board meeting will be July 27th at 6 p.m. for the appointment of a new board member and officers selected. A September open house will be planned at Jeff Craig.
