The shoe factory reunion was really nice Saturday. It was a small attendance and it may be our last one. Nathan and Donna Hughes were in charge again this year with Patty Chase, Glenda Sullivan, Carolyn Lowe, Francis Pike, Becky Purnell and others helping. We ask for someone to volunteer to take over next year and we would help them but so far no one has stepped up.

Nathan and Donna did a fine job for three years and we thank them but they are retiring and plan to travel and do things together and we wish them good luck. Donna really did a great job in getting prizes and gifts from local merchants and just people that wanted to give to be a part of it. We had gas cards, free dinners, free hair dos, gifts from stereo’s and even a $20 bill. I won a gift bag full of goodies from Friendship State Bank and 2 beautiful pot holders made by Florence Haskell, Thanks! The Madison shoe factory was represented by Bill and Mary Lynn Jewell and Mary Simmons. It was always nice to see them and others from other factories over the years. We really missed Jimmy Simmons. Alberta Pickett always helps serve the drinks but she just got out of the hospital and couldn’t be there. We had good food brought in by our regular people. Also had coffee provided by Florence Fairway Inn and the Florence Church of Christ.

Someone brought this poem in that Lucille Scott wrote several years ago. It was read at the reunion.

The US Shoe

Christmas Poem

Twas the night before

Christmas

and all throughout the aisles.

Not a creature was stirring

not even Jack Liles.

The shoes were all hung on

the track with great care.

In hope that when we return

they would still be there.

The guys in the shop with visions

in their head of that whiskey

stashed out in the shed.

With some in the break room and many out

back that had just settled down and tried

to relax. When up on the roof there was such a clatter. I left my machine to see

what was the matter and what to my

wondering eyes should appear.

Tom Crabtree and eight

foreman all full of beer.

On Adams and Sigmon and Scotti too

Boldery and Mike Jones now wait I’m not through

Tom Earls, James Shultz and even Al Bihr.

Now ain’t that a bunch to bring Christmas cheer.

With a flick of a switch off the roof they all came

It’s the office again calling their name.

At the end of the day as we turned out the lights.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Please call Patty or Glenda if you would like to take over the reunion next year and keep it going. We will help.

Patty and Glenda had lunch with Janet Cleaver last week. Joe and Janet have moved to Vevay and she loves it.

Happy birthday to Loretta Westrick and Danna Lee Jackson Adams.

Patty had a nice phone visit with Mary Ruth Poling. She told about Dale Poling having surgery and still recovering and wanted him on the prayer list. Also, DaniLee Thompson, Lulu Belle Thomas, Reta Gray and all in need.

Please call with your Florence and area news if you would like to see it n this weeks paper.
