Each year on Flag Day, June 14th, American Legion Post #185 here in Switzerland County holds a flag retirement ceremony.
When an American Flag becomes worn, faded, and torn, it is deemed to be “unserviceable” . As a respectful, ceremonial way of retiring the flag, each is burned in a structured and proper way.
The ceremony is conducted by veterans, as they are the only ones who have earned the right and honor to recite the ceremony and touch the unserviceable flags.
This year’s ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 14th, at the Switzerland County Fairgrounds. The program will begin at 7 p.m.
The public is invited to attend; and also to bring any unserviceable flag that they wish to have retired. Flags may also be dropped off at the American Legion post on Ferry Street prior to June 14th.
Following the ceremony, the legion will provide free hot dogs, tea, lemonade, and bottled water to all who attend.
