In the spirit of celebrating the 2013 Vevay-Switzerland County’s Bicentennial, Vevay Main Street has selected ‘First Friday’ themes to commemorate events from Vevay’s past and the county’s Swiss heritage.
“Fete de l’Escalade”, the theme for this March’s ‘First Friday’, pays homage to an annual festival held in Geneva, Switzerland to celebrate the 1602 defeat of attacking enemy troops attempting to scale the city’s defensive walls (escalade).
According to legend, a brave woman climbed onto the ramparts and dumped a cauldron of boiling soup on the attackers, killing at least one and rousing the townsfolk to valiantly defend their city and successfully repel the attackers.
‘First Friday’ participants are invited to visit the Community Art Center to sample a variety of soups by individuals, businesses and organizations. The Community Art Center of Switzerland County is located at the 217 Ferry Street (at the stoplight). The event begins at 6 p.m. and is open to the public.
For fun, ‘First Friday’ attendees carrying a soup ladle are eligible to receive a ticket from open businesses that evening. Tickets deposited at the Visitors Center before 9 p.m. will be entered in a drawing for a pair of tickets to the 2013 Flair for Wine (worth $120). The drawing will take place on or before Monday, May 6th.
Since 2008, Vevay Main Street has hosted a monthly ‘First Friday’ event. ‘First Friday’ features local art, free carriage rides, the company of others, businesses open until 9 p.m. and a surprise or two. In the warmer months, the downtown comes alive with sidewalk entertainment.
