Filing for county election is brisk as many offices will be on the ballot


The window to file for the 2020 primary elections has been open for barely a week, but there has been a lot of activity in the Switzerland County Clerk of Court’s office as candidates pick up filing information and announce their candidacies.

  Those candidates could begin filing as of last Wednesday morning, January 8th, and the filing period is opening until noon on Friday, February 7th. Candidates who change their mind may withdraw from the primary election up until Monday, February 10th.

  Primary elections will be held on Tuesday, May 5th; with the 2020 General Election slated for Tuesday, November 3rd.

  This year, the following offices and position are up for election:

  — Judge of the Switzerland Circuit Court. Greg Coy currently hold this office.

  — County Recorder. Nancy Barker is the current Recorder.

  — County Treasurer. Vicki James is the current Treasurer.

  — County Coroner. Clinton Earls is the current Coroner.

  — County Surveyor. Brian McAllister is the current Surveyor.

  — County Commissioner, District One, which represents Jefferson 1,2, and 3 precincts; and Craig 1 and 2 precincts. Josh South currently holds this office.

  — County Commissioner, District Two, which represents Posey 1 and 2 precincts; and York Township. Jerry Monjar currently holds this office.

  — County Council At Large: these three people can be elect from any area of the county, and work with the four members of the County Council who are elected to represent particular areas of the county. Currently: Lisa Fisher, Andy Haskell, and Rachel Schuler hold these three positions.

  — In addition, the Republican party will be electing State Convention delegates and also Precinct Committeemen.

  There were two early filings as the clerk’s office opened last Wednesday morning:

  — Gayle Rayles has filed as a Republican and is seeking the County Treasurer’s post.

  — Grant Dean has filed as a Republican and is seeing the County Commissioner, District One position.

  Since that opening day, the following candidates have officially filed for office:

  —  Melissa Brush has filed for the Republican party nomination for County Commission in District Two.

  — Clinton Earls has filed for re-election as the Switzerland County Coroner, on the Republican ticket.

  — Nancy Brown Barker has filed for re-election as the Switzerland County Recorder on the Democrat ticket.

  — Randy Leap has filed for the Republican primary as a candidate for an At Large seat on the Switzerland County Council.

  — Lisa Fisher has filed for re-election in the Republican primary to retain her Al Large seat on the Switzerland County Council.

  — Rachel Bladen Schuler has filed for the Democrat primary for re-election to her seat on the Switzerland County Council.

  — Rene M. Stewart has filed for the Republican nomination as Switzerland County Treasurer.


  Switzerland County Clerk of Courts Gayle Sullivan said that the window is now open for those who would like to register to vote in the upcoming election. If they have not already done so, citizens may register to vote until Monday, April 6th. The window to vote will reopen after the primary election on Tuesday, May 19th
