FFA’s ‘Queen of Hearts’ pageant set for Wednesday, February 26th

The Switzerland County FFA chapter will hold its annual “Queen of Hearts” pageant this coming Wednesday, February 26th.

Unlike any other pageant held in the area, the “Queen of Hearts” asks each candidate to select a particular charitable platform that she would like to bring attention to and raise funding for. The local FFA chapter then adopts the platform of the winner, and will spend the coming year working for that organization.

This year’s pageant will be held in the cafeteria of Switzerland County High School, and will begin at 7 p.m. There is a $3 admission fee, and the public is invited to attend.

This year there are 12 candidate vying for the title:

– VICTORIA MAY ABBOTT is the daughter of Tim and Jenny Abbott. She is a senior at Switzerland County High School, and is being sponsored in the pageant by Michael Glass Art Studio. Her platform for the pageant is Kids Against Hunger.

She has participated on the volleyball and softball teams; is active in FFA, the Spanish Club, the Pep Club, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Business Professionals of America. She is a member of the National Honor Society; and is a volunteer Sunday School teacher at Prince of Peace church.

After high school she plans on attending the University of Louisville and pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering.

- MACY BARWICK is being sponsored in the Queen of Hearts pageant by Vevay Swiss Inn, and her platform for the pageant is after school backpacks to raise awareness for childhood poverty. She is the daughter of Bryan and Carrie Barwick.

She has been active with Sophomore Leadership Community Service; is a member of the Switzerland County 4-H program; the high school band; and student council. She is in the National Honor Society; the prom committee; and volunteers her time with the Switzerland County Historical Society and the Vevay Main Street program.

Her career goal is to attend Hanover College and major in English and minor in Spanish.

- EMILY NICOLE CAMPBELL has a platform of supporting the Switzerland County Prevent Child Abuse Council. She is being sponsored in the pageant by The Crawlspace Doctor; and is the daughter of Joshua and Tasha Rose.

She attends Vevay Assembly Church, where she is a member of the youth group and volunteers in the nursery; and in school she is active on the cross country and track teams. She is in the Pep Club; and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She volunteers her time serving in a soup kitchen during the holidays, and also volunteers for the Switzerland County 5K for child abuse prevention.

After graduation, Emily hopes to attend college and pursue a career as a veterinarian.

– ERIKA DANIELLE COY is the daughter of Greg and Barb Coy, and is being sponsored in the pageant by IGA Plus. Her platform for the pageant is Special Olympics.

She is President of the National Honor Society; President of the Business Professionals of America; and is President of the Student Leadership Advisory Council. She was also captain of the volleyball and basketball teams; and is a member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church youth group and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a delegate to Hoosier Girls State.

Her career ambition is to attend either Butler University or Indiana University and major in sports journalism.

- MEGAN DASIS is being sponsored in the pageant by Parham Excavating; and is the daughter of Pat Mukaddam. Her platform for the pageant is the Switzerland County Animal Shelter.

She is a member of the soccer and track teams and the Pep Club; and is President of SADD. She is also a student manager for the basketball team. She is active in volunteering with the Switzerland County Animal Shelter.

After graduation Megan plans on attending the University of Indianapolis on a track scholarship, and plans on earning her degree in athletic training.

– McKENNA EDWARDS has as her platform promoting ‘Counting to 1,000’. She is the daughter of Mike and Marla Edwards, and is being sponsored in the pageant by RS Home Sales.

She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Business Professionals of America; and is a varsity cheerleader. She is also a member of the swimming and softball teams; and student council. She is active in the Olive Branch Baptist Church youth group; volunteers at the food pantry; and participated in the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics.

Her career plans are to one day own her own bridal shop and plan weddings.

– JACQUELINE DETRAZ HENSLEY is the daughter of Bobby and Monica Hensley; and her platform for the pageant is the Ronald McDonald House at Children’s Hospital. She is being sponsored by Detraz Services.

She is a member of the varsity volleyball and swimming teams; is a member of the Business Professionals of America; National Honor Society; the prom committee; and Spanish Club. She helped plant flowers with the Sophomore Leadership team; rang bells for the Salvation Army during the holidays; and volunteers at the Swiss Wine Festival.

Her career plans are to attend college and earn a degree in political science; then attend law school.

– AMBER HOSKINS is being sponsored in this year’s pageant by Patriot Water Company. She is the daughter of Jerry Hoskins and Susan Benning; and her platform is the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life.

She is a member of student council; the prom committee; and is secretary of the junior class. She is also a member of the National Honor Society; she volunteers at the radio station, participating in its sponsored events and in parades. She takes several AP courses in high school.

After high school her ambition is to earn her RN certification and work in the radiology program at King’s Daughters’ Hospital.

– PAIGE SAWYER is the daughter of Stacy Sawyer and Wiley Sawyer, and her platform in the pageant is the county Food Pantry. She is being sponsored by the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office.

She is secretary of the FFA; is a member of the National Honor Society; Business Professionals of America; and is a varsity cheerleader. She participates on the track and soccer teams. She also volunteers at the nursing home and the animal shelter; has been a part of the Salvation Army bell ringing program during the holidays; and plays indoor soccer.

Following high school, Paige plans on attending college, and is undecided on her major at this point.

– McKAYLI SCUDDER is being sponsored in the pageant by State Farm Insurance, Jeni Scudder; and she is the daughter of Devin and Chastity Scudder. Her platform for the pageant is the Foster Children’s Fund of Switzerland County.

She is active on the basketball, track, soccer, and golf teams in high school; and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; the Pep Club; and the Student Leadership Advisory Committee. She is active in the Switzerland Baptist Church youth group; volunteers at the county food pantry; and participates in Relay for Life.

She plans on attending college after graduation, earn her degree and then become an insurance agent; and she also hopes to work with a youth group.

– STEPHANIE SMITH is the daughter of Paul Smith and Susan Smith; and her platform for the pageant is the Salvation Army. She is being sponsored this year by the Tri Kappa sorority.

She is active in the Business Professionals of America; the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; the Pep Club; and the Outdoor Club. She is a varsity cheerleader; and participates in volleyball and indoor soccer. She has been involved in the bell ringing program for the Salvation Army; has volunteered at the animal shelter; and volunteers at the nursing home. She is the District 12 President for Business Professionals of America.

Her career plans are to attend Indiana University and major in forensic science.

– HOPE TANKERSLEY has a platform of supporting the American Cancer Society in the pageant; and is being sponsored by Turtle Creek Harbor. She is the daughter of Tammy Tankersley and Donald Tankersley.

She is a member of the basketball, volleyball, softball, and golf teams; is active in the Business Professionals of America; SLACK; and the Pep Club. She plays AAU basketball; volunteers at the soup and sandwich dinner; and volunteers at the food pantry.

Following graduation, she plans on attending Indiana University and earning a degree in orthodontics.
