(1) Chad, Nick, Cody, and Alex Honeycutt, sons of Charles “Sam” Honeycutt and Tammy (Allison) Honeycutt, presented Ron Otter of Markland Shell and Lowell Wayne Sullivan of the Vevay American Legion post with American Flags in honor of their support of American soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The flags were sent from Afghanistan by Sam Honeycutt, and had been flown over Camp Phoenix.
(2) Elizabeth Hon and Elijah Van Norstran were crowned as the Queen and King of the Switzerland County High School Homecoming, which was delayed by weather. Brianne Martin and Willie Self were the first runners up; and Jonah McClellan and Brittany Cole were the second runners up.
(3) Betty Lucas was honored with a “Sagamore of the Wabash” — the highest award given in the State of Indiana. State Representative Bob Bischoff made the presentation during a surprise luncheon, and told those attending that Betty Lucas had been awarded the honor for her years of dedicated community service.
(4) Switzerland County Road Runner Loren Lamson was featured. The Switzerland County High School senior has been the mascot for the high school basketball teams for three years. He is the son of Loren and Marla Lamson of Vevay.
(5) Vevay Newspapers reported on Michelle Aufdenkampe’s trip to Washington, D.C. as part of the “People to People” program. She attended the inauguration of President George W. Bush. She is the daughter of Bev Aufdenkampe of East Enterprise and Doug Aufdenkampe of Milford, Ohio.
(6) Switzerland County educator and community servant Harold DeNoon passed away at age 73. He came to Switzerland County in 1976 as high school principal; and later served as superintendent for two years.
(7) A water main break in front of Switzerland County High School closed schools corporation wide for a day, with students being sent home at 10:30 a.m. The water line was fixed in time for classes to resume the next day.
(8) Switzerland County school superintendent Tracy Caddell discussed how changes in the school financing situation at the state level would impact local schools here in the future. State changes cold force local school corporations to raise taxes in the county to make up for shrinking tax dollars.
(9) The Switzerland County Lady Pacers began defense of their Sectional title with a matchup against Milan in the opening round of the Sectional tournament held at Southwestern.
(10) Thurmen Roberts, one of Switzerland County’s longtime colorful characters, passed away at age 95. He was a veteran of military service, and was involved in all types of community service events in the county during his lifetime.
