An Ohio County family of six is safe but their home was destroyed by fire on Sunday, Dec. 31st.

The Rising Sun Volunteer Fire Department was called to a house fire at 9395 S.R. 56 North at around 10:30 a.m. after a fire started in an detached garage area of the home of Paul and Sarah Sheets and their four boys.

Rising Sun fire chief Kevin Armstrong reports the fire started in the garage area and the fire had moved through to the main house by time firefighters arrived. The eight year old noticed smoke and alerted his parents and all were able to get out safely, added Armstrong.

The fire forced closure between Henschen Road and Thuermer Hollow with a detour up to Salem Ridge.

Firefighters were on the scene until 2 p.m. as they battled the year’s coldest weather (5 degrees)

They were forced to rotate out firefighters as masks and air apparatus continued to freeze.

Fortunately Rising Sun received help from a number of other departments including Bear Branch and East Enterprise, along with Dearborn County help from Hogan and Lawrenceburg.

The cause has not been determined.

Others helping out were the Rising Sun Police Department, Ohio County Sheriff’s Department, State Highway Department, the Aurora and Rising Sun Auxiliaries along with the Red Cross provided help as well.

Community members took to social media immediately on how to give support for the family.

The Ohio County Communications was quick to send out a Facebook post with the family clothing needs for Paul and Sarah (Fleenor) Sheets and children Silas, Noah, Eli ad Uriah.

Kyla Hyde (Sarah’s sister) has started a Youcaring.com page for financial assistance.

Devonna Fleenor (Sarah’s mom) posted on Facebook on Monday … I want to thank everyone who has donated clothes to my daughter Sarah Fleenor and Paul Sheets and their 4 boys. It has been a blessing and overwhelming how people have came together. Thank you thank you thank you. At this point they are good on clothes… the main things now is donation of money to replace furniture appliances and find a place to rent in the Rising Sun area. We have a youcaring.com donation page for the family if anyone would like to give. It’s good to see all the kindness and support they have received. We are overwhelmed with gratitude. We love each of you and thanks for all you have done for my daughter and family…

The family is staying with his parents, Doug and Sharon Sheets, on South High Street.
