Entomology teams continue excellence with two state titles

The 4-H Entomology teams from Switzerland County achieved two landmark accomplishments this year.

The state competition was held on December 9th at Purdue University in West Lafayette, where the top teams from Indiana’s 92 counties met for the final exam in Purdue’s Career Development Event. In addition to Entomology there are similar competitions in Forestry and Crops. The event is open to all Indiana 4-H and FFA club members.

For the first time both teams, Junior and Senior, won state championships. Also for the first time one of our team members, Levi Baker won the high individual championship.

For the fifth year in a row, Switzerland County’s senior (high school) team earned first place at the state Entomology Judging contest.

Their first three championships were won in the junior division. Now as high school students they continue their consistent level of high achievement. Senior team members are: Lisa Cunningham (whose score was only one point behind first place on a test with 250 possible points), followed closely by Andrea Hall and Laney Proffet – all in the top five.

Switzerland County’s junior team (3rd-8th grade) also earned first place at State, improving upon their second place finish a year ago.

Team members are Levi Baker (first place individual), followed closely by Jenal Flynn (second place individual) and Patty Miller (seventh in the state) together forming a consistent high scoring team.

The newest members of the group are: Jade Nance, Andrew Romans and Sorren Russell and their competition scores continue to improve.

Both junior and senior teams earned their trip to state by placing first at the area contest in November. They know that there is a large amount of information to learn but the many hours of studying and preparing pays off.

Switzerland County’s teams are coached by Sandra Flynn and Milan Busching. Anyone interested in participating and learning more about insects or the 4-H Entomology project may contact the Purdue extension office in Vevay at (812) 427-3152.
