Switzerland County Tourism has announced that it will be hosting its annual ‘Easter Eggstravaganza’ at the Paul Ogle Riverfront Park on Saturday, March 26th.

Tourism is looking for people who might want to donate prizes for the children in any age group. Prize contributors will receive public mention and the name of the contributor will be listed with the name of the prize in the Easter Egg where it is hidden.

Those wanting to donate prizes may drop them off at the Tourism office on or before Monday March 21st. For more information call the Switzerland County Tourism Office at (812) 427-3237; or email Christy@switzcotourism.com.

Also on Saturday, March 26th, there will be a new event to Switzerland County – but a very traditional one in Switzerland.

Switzerland County’s First “Chalandamarz” will be held that day beginning at 10 a.m. prior to the Easter festivities.

“Chalandamarz” is the ancient custom in Graubünden, Switzerland where children chase away winter with noise and singing – shaking cowbells to “Wake up spring!”, and cracking whips to “Beat back winter”.

This is also the time when animals are led back to the Alps for pasture, and the local priests come out to bless “all creatures great and small”.

Children who would like to participate in this year’s “Chalandamarz” are asked to contact the Switzerland County Tourism Office for more details. Bring your pets, big and small for individual blessing by local pastors and priests and join Tourism in celebrating this Swiss tradition.
