Law enforcement officials throughout the state after receiving notice over the weekend that Indiana Conservation Officer Major Michael Portteus had passed away unexpectedly.
“Our agency is shocked from the loss of one of our leaders, today. I thank all of our citizens, friends, fellow law enforcement agencies and DNR colleagues for their thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. We continue to pray for the peace of his family, the entire DNR family and for our family of officers”, stated DNR Law Enforcement Division Director, Lloyd Arnold.
Major Michael Portteus began his work serving the DNR in Ohio County.
The 57-year old from Spencer passed away at his residence on Saturday, January 20, 2018. He has been an Indiana Conservation Officer since 1983, currently serving as Major of Support Services. He belonged to the Spencer Masonic Lodge and the Valley of Terre Haute Scottish Rite.
He is survived by his parents, mother and father-in-law, Edward R. and Sue Smith, wife, Angela Marie (Smith), son, Ian Michael Smith (Kristen) Portteus, grandchildren, Greyson and Claira Portteus, brothers, Patrick (Sally) Portteus of Monrovia, James (Amy) Portteus of Spencer, sister-in-law, Anita (Nathan) Beining of Kokomo, and several nieces and nephews.
